The Department of Opthalmology is seeking interested individuals to work as aResearch Technologist. The research focus of the lab is determining the underlying mechanisms and treatment approaches for various corneal diseases. Specifically, we examine how dysregulation of Wnt signaling in the corneal epithelium may lead to disease progression in keratoconus, which is a relatively common corneal disease that causes blurred vision.

The Research Technologist will be primarily responsible for but not limited to: performing tests with animal and/or human tissues and fluids; maintaining cultured cell lines; collecting relevant microscopy images; analyzing and presenting collected data. The individual will assist other lab members with on-going experiments and general maintenance.

The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of researchers, keep detailed notes, demonstrate a basic understanding of the scientific theory behind experiments and trouble-shoot experiments and/or laboratory equipment as the need arises.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform lab experiments following established protocols using tissue culture, , molecular biology, biochemistry (including Western blots) and immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Perform animal surgeries and provide care for recovering animals.
  • Keep detailed experimental notes. Enter data into relevant databases.
  • Analyze collected data and prepare graphs/charts/tables/figures for inclusion in presentations, publications and grant proposals.
  • Monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies, track receipt of orders
  • Assure compliance with all relevant animal/chemical/safety laboratory regulations
  • Provide general lab maintenance

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Individuals must demonstrate good oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Experience with animal models, tissue culture, transfections, CRISPR, other molecular biology and biochemistry techniques.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
