Summary/Objective

The Senior News Producer/Editor is the force “behind the scenes” of WAMU’s signature drive time programs, ensuring that WAMU offers essential daily news for the Washington region. The position oversees production for both Morning Edition and All Things Considered, including managing daily editorial meetings that ensure a workflow that is both efficient and collaborative. The Senior News Producer/Editor edits, assigns and produces spot news segments, books guests, monitors multiple news sources, writes and works with the Senior Managing Editor to identify content from the reporting staff for inclusion in the local news lineup. The Senior News Producer/Editor oversees production of NPR One, smart speaker collaborations, and leads production for Consider This. The role regularly offers editorial support and feedback to all newsroom staff with the goal of continuously strengthening our audio journalism. This position also oversees the work of NPR fellows and serves as a back-up news editor. The Senior News Producer/Editor is an idea generator: listening constantly, testing frequently, and always seeking better ways to present news content in a compelling, audience-focused, and memorable way.

Essential Functions
  1. Oversees Production of Morning Edition and All Things Considered: Runs daily meetings; assigns stories; edits audio and radio copy; manages production workflow, deadlines, and show rundown. Generates and develops creative ideas for segments, two-ways, and other on-air elements. Writes, reports, and produces local daily news spots and readers. Ensures that daily newscasts contain a robust digest of news and headlines from around the region.
  2. Manages Non-Broadcast Audio: Oversees NPR One, manages smart speaker collaborations, and leads production for the new daily local news podcast Consider This. In conjunction with other senior staff members, pursues opportunities that ensure WAMU serves current and future audiences wherever they may be. In addition to having a command of broadcast needs, plays a critical role in building non-broadcast audio capacity, conscious of audio trends and works to oversee platform growth in existing areas and seeks new opportunities to help define the newsroom’s future.
  3. Strengthens The Quality Of Our Local Journalism: Manages NPR fellow in story development and audio/web editing; assists with hiring; provides editorial support and feedback to all staff to improve newscast and audio production. Serves as an additional point of contact for NPR editors, member stations, and partner organizations.
  4. Special Projects: Takes on creative editorial projects, serves as back-up news editor, and assists with developing grant proposals for newsroom-related audio projects.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
    • Degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
    • 5-8 years’ experience producing and editing content in a fast-paced, deadline-driven broadcast environment
    • Experience producing digital content and social media content.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 8-10 years of relevant experience
