The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science and Mathematics seeks three visiting instructor or visiting assistant professor of physics for the 2021-2022 academic year. The positions are located primarily on either the Armstrong or Statesboro campus.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. Within this setting, the Department of Physics offers a variety of studies in the fields of Physics and Astronomy leading to a Bachelor of Science in Physics, a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Physics, or a Master of Science in Applied Physical Sciences degree. Our majors graduate well prepared for a career in physics whether it be in industry, a professional degree such as medicine or dentistry, teaching physics in the high school, or to pursue an advanced degree.

Position Description. Reporting to the Physics Department Chair, the Visiting Instructor or Assistant Professor in Physics will be responsible for a workload of 15 hours per semester in teaching core physics courses for majors and non-majors, and other duties as specified by the Physics Department Chair. All visiting positions are non-tenure track, academic (9/10 month) year appointments. Appointments are for one year only, although there is the possibility of reappointment should based upon funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned master's degree with 18 graduate semester hours in Physics or a related field (for visiting instructor) or doctorate (for visiting assistant professor) in Physics or a closely related field by August 1, 2021.

• Ability to teach undergraduate physics courses and laboratories.
  
• Ability to work with diverse populations.
  
• Effective communication skills in spoken and written English.
  
• Willingness to engage with institutional student success.
  
• Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
  
• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
