Job Description:

The Department of Neuroscience is seeking a highly motivated and experienced research biological scientist for an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative lab with a strong focus on neuroinflammation as a Biological Scientist II. Ideally, the candidate is well versed in preparing animal protocols. The candidate will conduct experiments independently. The successful candidate will perform a variety of assays to assess RNA and protein expression including isolation, immunohistochemically staining, immunoblotting, and molecular profiling. Additionally, analysis of tissue will require use of microscopy and software including but not limited to ImageJ.

Responsibilities to include:

Research/Experimentation

Conduct experiments with primary microglia cultures such as stimulation, phagocytosis functional assays, and immunocytochemistry. Perform in vivo techniques in mice including injections, blood draws, stereotaxic surgical assistance, post-op recovery. Collect and process animal tissue samples including cell isolation, and perform proper handling and storage of all samples. Perform variety of assays to assess RNA and protein expression including isolation, immunohistochemical staining, immunoblotting, and molecular profiling. Analysis of tissue cultures using microscopy and other software. Interact with clinical staff to coordinate acquisition of clinical samples and additional processing of samples including but not limited to immune cell isolation and plating. Assist Principal Investigator (PI) with poster preparation and/or scientific writing for publications.

Lab Support, Maintenance and Compliance

Maintain detailed records of experiments in electronic lab notebook and prepare presentations of results to PI. Prepare and follow animal protocols and update as necessary. Prepare solutions and check for proper storage and disposal of chemicals used. Autoclave and restock lab consumables. Contribute to troubleshooting and maintenance of lab equipment and instrumentation. Participate in meetings with lab staff and PI as needed.

Lab Organization

Organize and catalog items in the lab. Participate in development and modification of standard operations procedures (SOPs) and protocols for laboratory and research program. Assist with training of junior lab staff and undergraduate students. Assist in animal colony management for specific projects (husbandry, genotyping, census spreadsheet, etc.

Expected Salary:

$45,000 to $54,000

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have strong math skills, be organized and ensure project data is accurately recorded and stored. They will also possess excellent problem-solving skills, be able to work independently and alongside teammates in a fast-paced environment, and have the ability to communicate effectively. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of relevant research experience that will include animal handling, wet lab bench skills and clinical research sample acquisition and coordination. Ideally, other experience will include training research personnel or incoming students, preparing posters and assisting with the writing of scientific publications. Knowledge of basic research safety (EH&S, OSHA) guidelines.
