Under the direction of the Landscape Technology (LAT) Program, the LAT Technician supports classroom instruction of hands-on laboratories and activities at the Rock Creek Campus. A major component of this position is the ongoing maintenance of 4 acres of exterior grounds and facilities, including a 6,000 sq ft greenhouse, hoophouse, 2 buildings and general landscaped grounds. They work independently to:

  • Assist students and instructors with materials and equipment for hands-on instruction in the field
  • Provide instructional support of lab activities before, during, or after class, as needed
  • Monitor, inventory and purchase equipment, materials and supplies for LAT department
  • Maintain and repair gas- and diesel-powered landscaping equipment including mowers, tractors, chainsaws, etc.
  • Perform and coordinate general outdoor maintenance of 4 acres of ‘outdoor lab’ space
  • Maintain and coordinate the use of greenhouse and indoor lab facilities for the LAT department and other industry partners
  • Coordinate staffing, scheduling and training of casual and student workers
  • Serve as lead worker; coordinate the day—to-day activities and oversees the work of casual and student workers in the maintenance of the grounds and facilities.


Schedule has some flexibility but normally will be Monday - Friday 7:30-4:00 pm. After hours support for evening classes may be necessary on occasion.

Candidate Profile

These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.
Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.

  • Experience scheduling, coordinating and performing general landscape maintenance
  • Experience purchasing, operating, maintaining repairing gas,- diesel- and electric-powered landscaping equipment including mowers, tractors, chainsaws, etc.,
  • Experience teaching and training in the field in a hands-on setting
  • Experience providing instructional support for teaching and training landscape practices and skills
  • Maintaining and coordinating the use of greenhouse and indoor lab facilities
  • Experience working independently and as a member of a team
  • Experience coordinating, scheduling, training and directing employees
  • A demonstrated commitment to supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid public pesticide apprentice license within nine months of employment


Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline appropriate to the instructional support (relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Three years of experience in the technical area are required
  • Must have proven written and oral communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform
  • Proven ability to lead others and evaluate performance
  • Depending on laboratory assignment, some positions may also require specialized knowledge and program-specific certifications


Preferred Qualifications

  • Public pesticide applicators license
  • Experience or knowledge of irrigation systems
  • Additional education in Horticulture, Landscaping or a closely related field beyond the minimum qualifications
  • Experience with budgeting
  • Experience or knowledge of greenhouse facilities and management


Position Grade 19 Starting Salary Expectations The first two steps of the range are: $44,556 to $45,893 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity. Position Grade Salary Range $44556 to $71497 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work pressure, disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis
  • Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills
  • Working conditions may be somewhat disagreeable requiring occasional exposure to safety hazards, noise and temperature extremes


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some learned physical skills are required
  • Physical effort such as frequent standing, walking and lifting; guiding and/or carrying of lightweight materials or equipment; occasional periods of sustained effort
