Description:
The assistant director for the Office of International Education will have a primary responsibility of overseeing the University's language program, which provides academic English courses and other support to international students. The successful candidate will plan, develop, and assess the overall effectiveness of the language program and ensure that all regulatory guidelines are implemented according to federal and state rules and regulations.
Responsibilities:
Administration
- Develops and implements short- and long-term plans for the
efficient operation of the language program.
- Coordinates with TAMU-CC personnel, faulty, staff, students,
and/or parents to resolve issues related to languages program
students and other international students, as needed.
- Oversees academic support and monitoring of academic
performance of current language students and matriculated language
students as needed.
- Creates, analyzes, and reports on student surveys and makes
recommendations for improvements.
Communication
- Serves as the primary contact for language students on academic
and immigration issues in an on-call capacity, dealing with
problems ranging from immigration complications to personal
concerns, emergencies, conflicts, and complaints, etc. in
collaboration with OIE director and other office staff, as
appropriate.
- Carries out pre- and post-arrival communication with new
language students including assistance with visa interview
preparation, application issues, housing, scholarship applications,
TSI and Versant testing, lifting of holds, registration, health
insurance, banking, driver's license, etc.
Curriculum and Records
- Hires, coaches and evaluates instructors in the language
program.
- Helps language program staff with managing curriculum and
course development, review, and revision.
- Plans all languages student course schedules, works with
university offices in lifting of holds, and collaborates with
language student advisor(s) in registration of students.
- Manages languages student records, coordinates with program
staff and instructors on preparing and maintaining the electronic
class schedule, arranging the exams, and recording student grades
for distribution.
- Oversees the reporting of grades, compiles the list of students
completing the languages program, and provides completion
information to the university as requested.
Support of OIE
- Oversees the administration of the OIE in the absence of the
director.
- Participates in the coordination of OIE events and activities
such as new student orientations, International Education Week,
Parade of Nations, field trips, workshops, study abroad fairs,
etc.
- Works as an OIE strong team member, assisting the OIE
international student advisors in advising students, I-20 issuance,
regulatory reports, data processing, employment application,
reduced course load, reinstatement, SEVIS registration, travel,
etc., as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in ESOL, language education, International
Studies, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or a related
field.
- Six (6) years of direct experience in teaching or
administration within an intensive English program in a college or
university setting.
- Advanced knowledge in principles of second language
acquisition, ESL testing, and placement procedures.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to
work well under pressure with confidential materials while also
effectively handling multiple jobs.
- Proficient computer skills including experience with Microsoft
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Banner, etc.
- Ability to establish and maintain a strong team, and work in a
collaborative environment with both internal and external
university departments.
- Ability to work independently with minimal
supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with students and faculty,
and an awareness of common issues and problems affecting
them.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in ESOL, language education, International
Studies, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or a related
field.
- TESOL or TEFL certification.
- Experience in curriculum and program development, marketing,
and budget planning and management.
- Experience with development and implementation of student
support programs and services.
- Fluency in a second language.
- Experience in managing and maintaining websites with updated
information.
- Possessing ability to incorporate current technology into the
curriculum and other supportive services to improve communication
and supports for students.
- Competence in cross-cultural communication, information
collection, and computer applications.
- Demonstration of success in promotion and outreach to diversity
student populations.
