Job Description

PURPOSE
  • The Assistant Director of Academic Coaching and Success is responsible for successfully implementing, managing, and assessing programs that assist the university in being a student-ready university. The Assistant Director position provides leadership and oversight of programs that assist conditionally admitted students, students in the Viking to Islander Program (VIP), Texas Success Initiative liable students, and students on academic probation. In coordination with leadership, the Assistant Director ensures all Academic Success Coaches are trained and equipped to provide students with the highest quality coaching and support possible.


DESCRIPTION

Functional Area 1: Operations

Percent Effort: 55%
  • Lead the program development and manage activities related to the academic success coaching and student success programs, including determining success coach caseloads, ratios, and student assignments.
  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the success coaching program. Provide guidance and direction to staff involved in department services and programs.
  • Participate in the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists the Executive Director in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan.

Functional Area 2: Program Management

Percent Effort: 35%
  • Coordinate the Texas Success Initiative Program (TSI), which coordinates and directs students into the appropriate developmental education course(s) and ensure compliance with new Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate the CASA Developmental Education Program component with the New Student Orientation Summer Program. Manage data research for each TSI participant to assure accuracy and up to date status of students. Coordinate with department university chairpersons and program directors across campus to assure University compliance with THECB policy and student success.
  • Generate reports on student trends, risk-indicators, usage data, etc. utilizing technology, including Starfish software. Communicate and discuss findings with constituents.

Functional Area 3: Supervisory Management

Percent Effort: 10%
  • Hire and supervise up to four Academic Success Coaches, as well as student employees. Develop and implement onboard training, professional development opportunities, and continuous feedback to Success Coaches through the evaluation process.
  • Evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of success coaching delivered by Academic Success Coaches to students. Conduct data analysis projects; implement assessment initiatives designed to enrich academic success coaching and case management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Academic Advising and retention or other appropriate administrators.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field
  • Six (6) years of related experience in student services program.
  • Additional education may be considered as a substitution for the minimum requirements
    • Master's degree and four (4) years of relevant experience
  • Strong critical thinking, memorization, attention to detail, and communication skills,
  • Ability to work independently while developing strong collaborative relationships.
  • Ability to exercise excellent professional judgment and discretion, making decisions regularly that impact student welfare and the institution.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field
  • Experience with student success technology platforms.
  • Experience coordinating developmental education programs.
  • Experience designing and implementing an academic coaching model.
