FOUNDING CHAIR OF NURSING FOR BSN PROGRAM SOUTHERN
UNIVERSITY AT NEW ORLEANS
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) has received
approval of its letter of intent and feasibility study from the
Louisiana Board of Nursing. It is ready to begin developing a new
BSN program. We are seeking applications for the founding
Chair of Nursing for this Bachelor of Science in Nursing
program. This is a 12-month administrative position with faculty
status. The Chair will report directly to the Dean of the College
of Arts and Sciences and will provide day-to-day oversight for
operations of this new undergraduate program.
Candidates will have the following
- Commitment and passion for creating a student-centered, caring
teaching/learning environment and committed to improving diversity
within the Louisiana nursing workforce.
- Hold an earned doctorate in nursing or a related field from a
regionally accredited institution. The Master of Science in Nursing
degree is required if the doctoral degree is not in nursing.
- Possess an unencumbered license to practice as a registered
nurse in the state of Louisiana or be eligible for the same.
- Have a minimum of three years experience in a nursing education
administrative role and three years in clinical practice.
- Be eligible to meet academic qualifications as a tenure track
Professor or Associate Professor. Responsibilities include:
- The Founding Chair will have the authority and responsibility
to develop the program's infrastructure during the first year (AY
2021/22) according to LSBN regulations and hire qualified faculty
before the admission of students in AY 2022/23.
- developing an organizational structure for the program
- developing administrative policies and procedures screening,
hiring, orienting, supporting, retaining, mentoring faculty
- developing, maintaining and managing, the budget
- developing and maintaining contractual relationships with
clinical agencies for clinical instruction and preceptorships
- developing, maintaining, managing use of facilities and
resources In collaboration with faculty:
- finalizing curriculum plan and developing mission/philosophy,
goals, program & student outcomes
- developing course outcomes, course syllabi
- developing program evaluation plan and methods
- developing admission, progression, and graduation criteria
- developing policies related to student rights, safety, welfare,
academic guidance, and advising
- planning for clinical instruction, utilization of simulation
lab, clinical facilities, cooperating facilities, and clinical
- planning for equipping and utilization of skills and simulation
- planning for monitoring progress toward readiness for student
success on NCLEX
Other significant duties:
Meeting LSBN approval milestones, including earning initial
approval to ensure the admission of first BSN students in fall AY
2022 and earning final approval following the first-class
graduation in 2025.
Achieving professional accreditation with Commission on
Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) so first-class will benefit
from graduating from a CCNE accredited program.
