Job Details

UW Recreation has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Programs.  The University of Washington Recreation’s mission is to provide safe, accessible, and dynamic recreation experiences to engage students in growth and wellbeing.

The Associate Director for Programs provides executive oversight, direction, and supervision of professional staff members (currently three) who manage an extensive portfolio of activities including Intramurals, Rec Clubs, Fitness, Mindfulness, Personal Training, Peer Nutrition, and Massage.  In addition, the Associate Director will oversee Recreation’s student employee engagement efforts, as well as lead efforts for the Student Recreation Fund.

This position reports to the Director, serves on the department’s Executive Team, interacts with department staff on all initiatives related to the programming needs for Recreation, and assists in the development of long-range plans for the department.

At the University of Washington, inclusion and diversity are integral to excellence. We value and honor diverse experiences and perspectives, strive to create a welcoming and respectful learning environment, and promote access, opportunity, and justice for all. The incumbent must view themselves as part of not only UW Recreation, but also Student Life, the broader UW campus, Seattle and the Northwest region, and the national stage of campus recreation – and promote the department accordingly.

Personnel: Directly supervise three professional staff, who in turn manage large-scale student and temporary staffs. Provide functional leadership to all areas of supervision. Assist in performance management, and offer counsel and strategic advising to managers regarding creating policies and procedures, developing new programming, etc.

Budgeting: Provide guidance to managers and maintain general oversight in their budget planning and administration. In conjunction with the Administrator, approve and allocate annual budget requests that total approximately $1 million.

Strategic Planning: Participate in department-wide strategic planning efforts as part of the Executive Team.  Provide direction and counsel to the managers in their planning efforts.  Implement recreation programs that are inclusive and accessible. Serve alongside Recreation colleagues on the Inclusion Work Team.

Student Employee Engagement: Serve as chair of the newly created student employee engagement work team. The team’s charge includes evaluating the current program, developing new initiatives, and planning and organizing orientation events and training programs for all Recreation student employees.

Campus-Wide Initiatives: Represent Recreation on Student Life and Campus-wide committees. Be an active member of the campus community, supporting students and colleagues.

As a UW employee, you will enjoy generous benefits and work/life programs.  For detailed information on Benefits for this position, click here.
