The Director of the Trefny Innovative Instruction Center (Trefny Center) works collaboratively with the Provost's Office, College Deans, Department Heads, and faculty to guide the Trefny Center as a catalyst hub for innovations in teaching and learning including, but not limited to: providing faculty development, assessment and research on teaching and learning across campus, and supporter of faculty innovations in teaching. Under the leadership of the Director, the university envisions continual growth in Center activities that support broad faculty adoption of innovative course and curriculum design, technology use and integration into classroom experiences, assessment practices to guide instruction, and state-of-the-art pedagogical approaches. Day-to-day services provided by the Center includes course consultation and re-design services; new course consultation including online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses; assessment and recognition of current innovative practices; advancement activities related to adoption of innovative teaching and pedagogy across campus; and support services. The Director provides leadership and guidance for campus regarding innovations in instruction and enhancing the student learning experiences at Mines. The Director works in close collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Online Education to ensure that the vision and support for teaching and learning at Mines is consistent regardless of modality of the intended instruction. This position reports to the Provost’s office. This is a 12-month position.

Responsibilities: 

Lead Campus Towards Instructional Innovations:

  • Advance campus discussion around innovative teaching and pedagogy through a variety of events, workshops, meetings, and other structures that ensures all of campus is engaged in conversations around innovations in teaching and learning- provide instructional vision in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Online to ensure learning at Mines is modern, rigorous, and of the quality expected at Mines now and in the future.
  • Provide senior-level vision, leadership, and analysis of effectiveness in teaching and learning across campus including:
  • overall quality of learning opportunities, and
  • compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Act as a pedagogical and instructional technology expert in service to the university faculty members and student population.
  • Continuously explore, research, and assess new and promising innovative approaches toward pedagogy or instructional technologies.
  • Research and publish about innovations in instruction in STEM higher education, teaching and learning at Mines, Teaching & Learning Center impacts and institutional change, and faculty development.
  • Inform and make recommendations to the Provost regarding curricula, instruction, faculty recognition, faculty professional development, and promotion of innovative teaching and learning at Mines.
  • Act as fiscal steward of all Trefny Center operating, contracts/grants, and foundation funds. Stewardship includes, but is not limited to, procurement, bookkeeping, fiscal reconcile, and budget projection.
  • Supervisory authority for professional and paraprofessional staff members of the Trefny Center (see Trefny Center org. chart), this includes the HIVE (a team of student workers who help faculty develop videos and instructional resources.
  • Manage physical location(s) of Trefny Center including, but not limited to, workspace, technology hardware, and software.
  • Lead collaborative efforts to ensure accessibility material/instruction to further support institutional efforts to align with disability laws and regulations.
  • Evaluate and report Trefny Center performance measures.
  • Supporting Institutional Initiatives:

    • Lead and support core institutional initiatives as directed by the Provost related to teaching and learning within the Mines@150 strategic plan.
    • Lead and support Mines’ development of learning opportunities.
    • Support the Online Initiatives related to instruction in close collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Online.

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    Education and Experience:

    • An MA or MS degree from an accredited university or college in education, faculty development or a closely related field.
    • At least ten years of experience working within a post-secondary college or university, including progressive experience in faculty development and innovative instructional design.
    • At least ten years of teaching in STEM related areas.
    • At least five years' experience within a teaching and learning center, preferably in a leadership role or increasing leadership responsibilities.
    • Demonstrated academic management experience including development and implementation of faculty learning experiences, classroom observation techniques, faculty coaching, faculty teaching evaluation, and innovative instructional design.
    • Demonstrated experience advancing STEM and applied science education among departments, faculty members, or graduate students.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Strong working knowledge of pedagogical theory (research-based) and proven teaching approaches that promote student engagement and an inclusive learning environment.
    • Demonstrated evidence of leading and supporting standards-based instruction including curriculum mapping and alignment.
    • Demonstrated excellence in consultation, presentation, communication (written reports and papers; oral) and collaboration skills.
    • Demonstrated excellence in budget management, fiscal stewardship, resource and operational management including grants.

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    • PhD is preferred from an accredited university or college in education, faculty development, educational psychology, educational technology, or a closely related field.
    • Experience in multimedia development.
    • Evidence in acquiring grants, contracts or other external fundraising and support.
    • Experience in program and course assessment.
