Job Summary

The Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students and Community Equity Educator is a key administrator at Caltech. This role involves being a trusted and credible resource for students around issues related to unlawful discrimination and harassment and sex- and gender-based misconduct (“equity issues”), working with both undergraduate and graduate student communities within labs, residences, and student leadership groups to engage in preventative outreach efforts. This position is also primarily responsible for education and prevention programs for staff, faculty, and postdocs. The role reports to the Assistant Vice President for Equity and Equity Investigations/Title IX Coordinator. Together with the Assistant Vice President for Equity and Equity Investigations/Title IX Coordinator, the role will also have a dotted line to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

The position also maintains a high-level of contact and coordination with other senior administrators overseeing the Office of Residential Experience and associated professional and student staff, the Student Counseling Services, the Offices of the Undergraduate and Graduate Deans, Student Housing, Athletics, the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity, and Campus Security, as well as student leadership. This position also has frontline responsibility for engaging in intakes of students' concerns and complaints regarding equity issues, making referrals to and receiving referrals from the Campus Sexual Violence Advocate, coordinating other support resources, and assisting in resolution processes, including mediated resolutions and investigations, with the Assistant Vice President for Equity and Equity Investigations/Title IX Coordinator and the Equity and Title IX Lead Investigator.

Job Duties

The key priorities for this position include but are not limited to:
  • Perform outreach and education efforts, including bystander training and techniques, within all Caltech communities, with special focus on student communities (undergraduate and graduate) to raise awareness and help prevent unlawful discrimination and harassment and sex- and gender-based misconduct.
  • Build programming efforts centered on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion through close collaboration with campus partners such as the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity and the Office of Residential Experience.
  • Intake reports of student-related sex- and gender-based misconduct and unlawful discrimination, harassment, and retaliation; advise students on available support services, confidential resources, and complaint and resolution processes; and assist with related resolution measures and processes.
  • Coordinate with Student Affairs and other campus organizations to resolve student issues and engage in preventative outreach efforts.
  • Monitor student supportive measures and help students negotiate issues related to interpersonal problems associated with concerns and complaints.
  • Coordinate strategic and programming initiatives with the Assistant Vice President for Equity and Equity Investigations/Title IX Coordinator, Equity and Title IX Lead Investigator, and Deputy Title IX Coordinators for Faculty, Staff, and JPL at monthly meetings.
  • Manage six figure annual grant from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, including day to day program management, financial coordination, and yearly renewal process.
  • Other duties and special projects assigned.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Resources, Law, or related field.
  • 3 or more years of experience in student affairs, human resources, equity in higher education or related field.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and mediation skills.
  • Familiarity with Title IX issues and concerns in higher education.
  • Familiarity with diversity, equity and inclusion issues and efforts.
  • Outreach and education experience.
  • Strong collaboration and professional partnership skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Investigation experience.
  • Grant management and application experience.
  • Conflict resolution experience.
  • Experience working with students in STEM-related fields.
