The Assistant Director of Youth Development is responsible for three of the College's robust youth develop programs that require year-round management, program planning, participant recruitment, and academic year program delivery. The ELC's youth development programs were created as part of the College's commitment to community engagement in alignment with the College's strategic goal related to civic engagement.

All of these programs are designed to build a supportive peer network of youth change agents. As a cohort, program participants explore a range of topics including: systems of oppression, socialization, allyship, solidarity, liberation, art as activism, and more. Programs are delivered through discussion and experiential learning.

The Assistant Director of Youth Development is responsible for developing, overseeing, and implementing the community-based youth development programs within the Elma Lewis Center for Civic Engagement, Learning, & Research. The Assistant Director will develop mutually beneficial partnerships with area schools and community-based organizations to foster youth development, with specific focus on youth empowerment, identity & diversity, activism through the arts and social justice. The Assistant Director will oversee three youth development programs for high school students in grades 9-12. These programs include: YouthLEAD, a tuition-based program in Sharon, Massachusetts; Creative Community Network (CCN), a tuition-free, fully-funded program for students throughout the Boston area; and the annual Teen Identity and Diversity Education (TIDE) Conference, a space where high school aged students from throughout the Boston area share their art, music, ideas, dreams and practices for their communities. ELC youth programs intentionally focus on issues of diversity, equity, social change, community and peer network building within a social justice frame. CCN and the TIDE Conference especially seek to work with and support high school students who live in under resourced areas.

Oversee, develop, and implement community-based youth programs for the Elma Lewis Center.

Oversee the Emerson YouthLEAD Sharon and CCN programs and work with Emerson College Social Justice Center student staff and YouthLEAD and CCN Peer Leaders to develop an enhanced curriculum addressing issues of equity, identity, and social justice.

Build relationships with Sharon and CCN students, families, and the ELC's Youth Programs Advisory Group, and recruit new students for the program.This includes relationships with area schools and community-based youth organizations to foster collaboration around youth development activities, and conduct ongoing outreach to communities that are under-resourced as well as those that also have deep experience with community organizing.

Build upon existing and create new and develop and deliver program curricula that focuses on youth empowerment, identity and diversity, and social justice; and assess the effectiveness of related programs.

Create and implement program participant recruitment strategies and engage in community-based engagement and outreach strategies.

Plan, lead, and implement the Teen Identity and Diversity Education Conference on an annual basis, in collaboration with Senior Peer Leaders in Emerson's CCN and YouthLEAD programs.

Assess the effectiveness of existing programming and develop new and innovative approaches to addressing the emerging needs and interests of Emerson YouthLEAD Sharon, CCN and TIDE Conference participants.

Develop a leadership preparation program for the development of Senior Peer leaders for both the Sharon and CCN programs.

Identify program participants with the potential to become Senior Peer Leaders.

Develop promotional materials for the youth development programs within the Elma Lewis Center, create and maintain a social media presence, and identify opportunities to increase the public profile of the Elma Lewis Center's youth development programs.

Prepare and present presentations and reports about the Elma Lewis Center's youth development programs for advisory boards, Emerson groups, and potential funding sources.

Support the development of grant applications, foundation proposals, and other potential external funding support opportunities.

Manage youth development program budgets and expenses, purchase program supplies, reconcile expenses, and perform other administrative functions to ensure the smooth operations of the program.

Attend regular Social Justice Center meetings and work collaboratively with staff on the delivery of Social Justice Center programs and activities.

Work collaboratively with Social Justice Center staff to ensure consistency in programmatic approaches and values

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Education

Minimum of three years of experience working with youth development, youth enrichment, or youth mentoring programs; previous experience working with a diverse community of young people, event planning experience, and previous experience developing and delivering curricula for youth programs.

Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, education, social work, communication, social justice) or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Knowledge of community-based youth development programs.

Ability to collaborate with local schools, non-profit organizations, and youth development organizations in order to recruit program participants.

Experience supervising staff and/or student employees.

Strong intercultural fluency and the ability to engage authentically with diverse communities.

Ability to relate to, engage, and empower young people to tap into their own

leadership potential.

Excellent communication, effective organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Education

Master's Degree in relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, education, social work, psychology).

Knowledge of youth development programming in higher education settings.

Knowledge of community organizations in the Boston area.

Knowledge of youth development and learning theories, strategies for social change, and nonprofit organizational functioning.

Knowledge of trauma-informed practices.

Skill in professional writing and/or publishing, and presentations.

Grade of Position: A16E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

Hiring Range: $61,350.00 - $64,300.00
