Position Summary and Responsibilities
We are seeking an Executive Director for the Wimpfheimer Nursery School and Infant Toddler Center. Opened in 1927 to support Child Study at Vassar College, the Wimpfheimer Nursery School remains a laboratory school for students and faculty to this day. In 2004, programs for infants and toddlers at a second site on the Vassar campus were added. Both sites offer curricula that are driven by the application of state-of-the-art knowledge in developmental psychology and early childhood education and related fields, while doing so in a child centered environment.

Executive Director responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership in the day-to-day operational functions of a successful laboratory nursery school and infant toddler center.
  • Developing strategies to ensure that buildings and classrooms meet the current and anticipated needs of a laboratory school as well as the needs of children and families.
  • Creating and supporting a vision for curriculum development and design.
  • Providing teachers, staff and families with guidance in understanding and obtaining appropriate child learning and developmental resources.
  • Promoting strong relationships with parents and families.
  • Supporting Vassar faculty and students in their design of research projects.
  • Reviewing and approving research observation protocols.
  • Setting budgets and ensuring that enrollment targets are met.
  • Promoting and creating teacher and staff development opportunities.
  • Ensuring that all state and county licensing and health related requirements are met.
  • Coordinating student teacher opportunities with local Colleges and other organizations.
  • Supervising the creation of bi-annual child developmental profiles and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Teaching at the College level is an opportunity but not required.

  • Master’s degree in early childhood education or a related field.
  • A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in a childcare setting.
  • Direct experience in a classroom setting with pre-school age children is essential; experience in a laboratory school setting preferred.
  • Evidence of a commitment to a child centered and developmentally appropriate early childhood education is required.
  • Continued professional development is expected and supported.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A deep understanding of developmentally appropriate practice highlighting a play-based curriculum.
  • The successful candidate will establish a community within the preschool by taking an active role in day-to-day activities, including visiting classrooms, greeting families and working closely with staff.
