Job Summary

The Department of Communication and Media seeks candidates for a Lecturer I position to teach one course at 33.3% appointment effort during the Fall 2021 semester (starting August 30 through December 31, 2021).  This is not a tenure-track position.  The successful candidate will teach one course: COMM 261: Views on the News: What Shapes Our Media Content.  This course examines how various aspects of society shape the news. It is designed to offer thoughtful understanding of the role of news as a cornerstone of democracy and a critical account of the production, dissemination, and reception of news content and media institutions.

Responsibilities*

In addition to the teaching responsibilities provided in the job summary, the lecturer is expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine matters related to instruction.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Communication and Media, Communication Studies or closely related field.  Previous experience teaching introductory and advanced courses in communication and media at the college level is required.  

Desired Qualifications*

A PhD in Communication and Media or Communication Studies is preferred. Candidates should have a record of excellence in instruction at the college level teaching introductory and advanced courses in communication and media.  We especially seek candidates with a breadth of experience teaching undergraduate courses including writing intensive courses, and courses on news content and media institutions.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

The successful candidate will be selected based on demonstrated subject matter expertise, successful performance in the classroom, and the needs of the department. Communication and Media expects to make an offer by July 23.
