Job Description
The Motion Designer is an agile problem solver that uses animation and design to tell a story on a variety of design surfaces that align with university goals and the strategic priorities within Advancement at Virginia Tech. The Motion Designer reports to the Assistant Director of Design in the University Relations Creative Studio. The Creative Studio, charged with creative output and consultation across the enterprise, generates video and still content; graphic design, and digital design and development, to support several platforms. The studio’s goal is to support the creative needs of Advancement, by bringing concepts to fruition in the form of magazines, videos, photos and many other products. The Motion Designer works alongside Advancement colleagues, including (but not limited to) web, marketing, editorial, and visual teams, to support the marketing and communication efforts of the university on a variety of content platforms.
The Motion Designer has a strong understanding of varying needs of different content platforms including email, news and publications websites, social media posts and stories, print and other static media, and can adjust accordingly. They will conceptualize, organize and create motion graphics that turn functional goals into finalized project deliverables such as, but not limited to, gifs/memes, videos, digital promotions/ads, written scripts, illustrations, storyboards, animatics of long-form video, presentations/slide decks, environmental graphics and moving digital displays, and short-form, quick-turn breaking news content (kinetic type, infographics, explainer videos, etc). They may also edit raw video footage alongside content creators to incorporate title and post-production work and add effects/elements.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in fine arts, visual communications or related field and experience and or training experience in motion graphics design
Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and evaluating the creative process and adhering to schedules
Collaborative in nature
Ability to handle many projects simultaneously
Ability to work under pressure and to organize and meet deadlines
Demonstrated experience visualizing creative concepts
Ability to work with project management software
Strong interpersonal communications skills
Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues and clientele
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in the fields of web development, motion and graphic design, photography, video production, writing and editing, and digital storytelling
Ability to function efficiently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
Proficient in the use of a computer for writing, editing, email and standard office programs
Proficient in the use of Adobe products (After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator)
Portfolio of work
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree in fine arts or communications
Knowledge of Virginia Tech or higher education
Knowledge of the advancement model as it applies to higher education marketing and communications
Proficient in the use of a Mac computer
Experience managing complex projects
