General Summary/Purpose

The Research Program Coordinator will be responsible for helping to manage a study of Social Media Enhanced Care of Depression and other clinical research studies carried out by the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center. Responsibilities will include recruiting participants, collecting data from participants, monitoring progress on the studies, and ensuring compliance with IRB and sponsor requirements.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for participant recruitment through the Johns Hopkins Bayview Community Psychiatry Program and other clinics across the Department of Psychiatry: verifies participant eligibility in accordance with research protocol; obtains informed consent; documents reasons for non-consent; communicates with the study participants throughout the research process; schedules interviews; reimburses participants upon completion of their participation.

Responsible for editing and entering data; corrects data by performing database ‘logic check’ procedures. Create and manage a database containing participant information and data. Responsible for corresponding with the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutional Review Board (IRB): prepares and submits annual continuing review request with supporting report; prepares and submits required amendment requests for research protocol; reports adverse events in accordance with IRB requirements; adheres to all protocol requirements to ensure data validity and ethical treatment of participants.

Responsible for assessing and summarizing study progress with the principal investigators and other members of the study team; maintains ongoing communication with coordinators at the other sites. Orients any new staff (research assistants, residents, fellows, and clinicians) working on the study. Responsible for scheduling and facilitating a weekly meeting of the study site’s physicians and professional staff and a monthly meeting of study team members. Responsible for creating and maintaining study manuals and standard operating procedures.

As the liaison for each study, maintains ongoing communication with coordinators within Johns Hopkins and at other sites involved. Research Coordinator may supervise a Research Program Assistant II who will perform similar roles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Previous research experience.

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interact with faculty and staff on research teams, in clinical programs, and with educational outreach initiative to strategize about their communication needs.
  • Attention to detail a must. Good proofreading skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills to deal effectively within and outside the department.
  • Excellent written communications skills in a variety of forms, print material, website content, speeches, and publicity materials.
  • Knowledge of and aptitude for graphic design and typography.
  • Skilled in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures.

Physical requirements:

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.
  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.

Supervisory responsibility:

May act as a lead to Research Program Assistant II or volunteers.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
