Job Description Summary

Florida’s only public university exclusively teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is looking for exceptional candidates to serve as the Machinist & Prototype Laboratory Manager.

The Machinist & Prototype Laboratory Manager position will work with students, under the guidance and direction of faculty, to support the needs of the academic programs, research initiatives, and other student-focused activities in the machine shop and design laboratory. The successful candidate will be able to operate machine tools to fabricate student projects and research tools, conduct safety training for faculty and students, manage student and student group access to the equipment, and coordinate activities for smooth, efficient operation of the equipment and laboratory.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages the day-to-day activities of the machine shop and design laboratory and with a focus on student projects, prototype products, and research tools.
  • Operate machine tools with responsibility for CNC and manual milling machines, lathe, horizontal and vertical band saws, drill press, welding machines, etc. Also, will understand basic programming related to CNC milling machines and familiarity with CAD, drawing software.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations. Facilitate a safe laboratory and shop environment, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Orient students, faculty, and staff on the capabilities and resources available in the design and fabrication shop
  • Supervise students in the proper use of the equipment and safe laboratory techniques.
  • Train faculty and students on the proper use of equipment, as needed.
  • Advise and ensure the use of personal protective equipment, and safe handling, storage, and disposal of potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Maintain a clean, organized facility.
  • Support the regular maintenance of equipment.
  • Keep orderly, accessible inventories of supplies.
  • Maintain the documentation including manuals, safety documents, and contacts.
  • Collaborate in scheduling to effectively use shared laboratory facilities.
  • Ability to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment.
  • Manages student access to equipment based on training and safety protocols.
  • Oversees students and/or student workers in any of the above activities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be proficient in the operation of machine shop equipment including CNC and/or manual mills, lathes, band saws, drill press, laser cutter, and use welding equipment and hand tools.
  • Must have the ability to manage a basic machine shop with standard operating procedures, environmental health, and safety (EH&S) practices, and complete any routine maintenance required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of technical drawings, dimensioning, and tolerances are required.
  • Must be able to use precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges, and dial indicators.
  • The applicant must know how to assemble mechanical components.
  • Must have a strong focus on attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, with the ability to work positively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Excellent organizational skills that include effective planning, time management, and multi-tasking.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrate a customer service orientation.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma plus additional relevant coursework (A.S. /B.S. preferred)
  • Certifications and documented formal training as a machinist and/or toolmaker.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ machining experience is required.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated competency in CAD software (SolidWorks) and CNC machine programming.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Supervisory experience of full-service machine shop or instrument shop, preferably in a university environment.


REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

  • This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.


NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is salary exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required.

TARGET HIRING SALARY: $50,750 - $54,250, commensurate with experience.
