Position Summary:

This position is responsible for maintaining the trees and shrubs on the Madison campus and off campus properties. This includes care of existing trees and shrubs, knowledge and application of chemical and cultural controls, and installation of new landscaping. This requires skillful operation of all related vehicles and power equipment, ability to safely perform physical work under adverse conditions, to work independently and direct the work of temporaries, and to carry out experimental work for research using new techniques and materials.

Additional Information:

Must be available for snow removal and overtime work as necessary.
Class B CDL with air brakes and tanker required within six months of hire.
Physical work requiring lifting, bending, stooping and kneeling for extended periods of time.

Knowledge and Skills

- Knowledge of proper methods and differing techniques for transplanting container, bareroot and B&B trees and shrubs; care of newly planted trees, shrubs and hedges.
- Knowledge of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers and their compatibility and calibration.
- Knowledge of horticultural tools and their proper uses; pruning saws, knives, pruners, loppers, pole saws, hedge trimmers, etc.
- Knowledge of safety hazards, safety precautions and practices. Use all equipment, chemicals, etc. with entire population of campus in mind.
- Knowledge of Wisconsin driving laws and motor vehicle operating procedures.
- Knowledge of common operator maintenance procedures for motor vehicles and other motorized equipment.
- Skill in communicating, including interpersonal skills.
- Ability to exercise a strong sense of priority and time management.
- Ability to identify common trees and shrubs both in and out of leaf.
- Ability to detect common insect and disease problems.
- Ability to calibrate equipment used in chemical applications.
- Ability to skillfully operate tree spade in all conditions.
- Ability to identify weeds.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and direct temporary help.
- Ability to read drawings or simple blueprints.
- Ability to operate all types of vehicles and equipment necessary for landscaping and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to maintain a professional and service oriented relationship with customers and co-workers.
- Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, and quality oriented.
- Ability to work hours in excess of the normal work shift to include weekends and nights.
- Ability to apply various pesticides/herbicides.
- Ability to perform heavy tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and other motions for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work in and with a team.
- Ability to present a neat, clean appearance at all times.
