Director, Total Rewards

Primary Function

As the Director of Total Rewards you will be responsible for designing and implementing an overall employee rewards program to support the mission and objectives of Smith College. You will report directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer and be responsible for leading the development of total rewards philosophies and methodologies, leading the implementation of new projects and initiatives and directing the service delivery of the compensation and benefits team. You will need to have both strategic and hands-on experience.

Responsibilities

Compensation

  • Develop, implement, and manage compensation programs, policies, and processes to attract, retain, and reward employees; includes responsibility for executive compensation.

  • Lead the design of compensation programs and frameworks, taking the lead on the creation of a college-wide compensation philosophy.

  • Establish guidelines for new hire salary recommendations, internal job offers, and promotions.

  • Lead compensation planning and review cycles with strong collaboration with HR Partners and other peers.

  • Provide leadership in college wide communications and total rewards delivery.

  • Design compensation communications, statements, tools and processes for recruiting, HR Partners, managers, employees and other key partners.

  • Act as an internal consultant on compensation matters for human resources partners, talent acquisition, and college leadership.

  • Oversee the participation in salary surveys and analyze market data to ensure compensation objectives are achieved.

  • Partner with internal HR partners, HR analytics, as well as other college partners (e.g. ITS, Finance) on design and project work.

  • Prepare materials and facilitate analysis for the compensation committee, cabinet, etc.

  • Identify, assess and execute ongoing compensation process improvements.





Benefits

  • Manage a comprehensive benefit program to ensure proper administration, competitive position, system support, and cost effectiveness.

  • Negotiate and manage relationships with benefit plan providers, vendors, auditors and consultants for services, premiums, and plan administration. Ensure benefit plans are reviewed for competitiveness on an annual basis.

  • Supervise the maintenance of enrollment, application, and claims records for all benefit plans.

  • Manage the configurations of new benefit options, open enrollment, and file transfer in the HRIS.

  • Oversee implementation of all leaves and ADA procedures.





Other

  • Design and implement other total rewards programs such as employee recognition, financial wellness and other contemporary offerings.

  • Partner with the HR Partner team to deliver compensation and benefits training to the human resources team and the overall organization.

  • Pro-actively make recommendations for improvements of related policies, practices and procedures.

  • Maintain current knowledge and ensure compliance with federal, state, local, international, and other agency laws and regulations pertaining to total rewards; analyze new or updated requirements and determine necessary changes to internal policies and practices.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the total rewards team including the recruitment, performance management, development, and supervision of staff.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree .

  • 8+ years of relevant Human Resources experience, including experience in the design and implementation of total rewards programs.



Demonstrated success in the following areas

  • Demonstrated thought leadership as an HR professional.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to deliver messages to all levels of the college.

  • Ability to work and lead effectively within a team environment.

  • Balanced leadership skills with a willingness to play a hands-on role.

  • Excellent analytical skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated proficiency using spreadsheets and creating presentations.

  • Thorough knowledge of employment laws, and other government compliance regulations that affect the total rewards space.

  • Knowledge of ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA and emerging regulatory issues preferred.

  • Experience using Workday.
