College of Arts and Sciences, Dept. of Physics - Instructor/Professorial Lecturer and Lab Positions

The Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for adjunct faculty positions for the Fall 2021 Semester, which runs from August 30th to December 18^th. The department is seeking candidates to teach lecture sections for PHYS 160, introductory astronomy and PHYS 326, a class for non-majors introducing the application of physics to public policy issues. Applicants must have a Master’s Degree (or higher) in physics, astronomy, or a related discipline and demonstrated capacity to teach at the university level. Responsibilities include preparing and giving lectures, assigning and grading assessments including homework and exams, supervising class during two or three 75-minute class periods, and coordinating with other department faculty and teaching assistants, for classes with up to 36 students.

The department is also seeking adjunct lab instructors for introductory physics and astronomy labs. The adjunct lab instructor positions require a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in physics or related discipline and a demonstrated capacity for the instruction of introductory calculus and non-calculus based undergraduate physics or astronomy labs. Responsibilities include directly supervising and evaluating up to four laboratory sections, each with up to eighteen students.
