Residential Area Director (RAD)

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Residential Area Director position at Millersville University (PA) is a professional live-in staff member working in the Department of Housing and Residential Programs. Millersville University houses over 2,200 students on-campus in five residence halls, including three suite-style buildings. The incoming Residential Area Directors each will be responsible for the management of a suite-style residential area housing approximately 600 – 700 residents, one graduate assistant, 14 resident assistants, and 10 desk attendants. The RAD’s primary focus is staff supervision, student and residential community development, student conduct, and crisis management. This position requires mentoring, supporting, and providing high level of customer service to the resident population and their families.

The Residential Area Director ( RAD ) is a full-time, professional level live-in staff position within the Department of Housing and Residential Programs and the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management. The Residential Area Director is responsible for cultivating an environment that enhances and promotes the academic, personal, and social development of students residing in the University residence halls. The Residential Area Director is responsible for the implementation and leadership of residential programs and processes. The Residential Area Director provides administrative oversight for one or more residence halls including the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of graduate and undergraduate student staff, and the creation, oversight, and promotion of student engagement and leadership opportunities. The Residential Area Director evaluates and adjudicates student conduct cases. The position specifies contract responsibilities that require living in a University-furnished apartment.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (or anticipated by July 1, 2021) in College Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, or a related Human Services field
  • At least one year of experience in college and university student Housing and Residence Life at the graduate assistant and / or full-time professional level
  • Must have working knowledge of college student developmental theory
  • Strong working knowledge of college Housing & Residence Life, including Residential Engagement, Business and Facilities Operations, Student Conduct, Crisis Response, and Mentoring Students
  • Successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Multi-task and to effectively work with diverse groups of individuals, including students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Demonstrated experience with effective campus and community wide collaboration
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to work with students of diverse cultures, racial and ethnic groups, and socioeconomic status.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in coordination with others.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI )

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with suite-style community building
  • Experience partnering with faculty on living-learning community initiatives
  • Active participation in local, state, regional, and / or national Student Affairs-related professional organizations, such as ACPA, ACUHO -I, NASPA, etc.
  • Prior experience using Adirondack Solutions’ The Housing Director ( THD ) software
  • Prior certifications and / or training in Clery Act, ATIXA / Title IX, Green Dot, Allies / Safe Zone, Suicide Prevention, and / or ALICE Training.
