Classification Title: Engineer II

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL or MagLab) High B/T (HBT) Facility in the Department of Physics, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is seeking an Engineer II. This position provides users with experimental conditions at the extreme of ultralow temperatures and high magnetic fields in an electromagnetically quiet environment. The operations of the HBT Facility span the Microkelvin Laboratory building, several lab spaces nearby in Williamson Hall, and the High Bay Convergence Laboratory, and the Fast-Turnaround Instrument in the Physics Building. The Engineer II must be detail-oriented and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. This position will be involved in all technical aspects of maintaining, servicing, and designing/assembling cryogenic equipment, vacuum pumps, and high magnetic fields provided by superconducting solenoids. Surveying the operational and safety status of the main instruments will be performed daily. The ability to maintain MS Office Suite documents and spreadsheets is required, and familiarity with a CAD (computer-aided design) program is preferred. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Review and establish on a daily basis the operational and safety conditions of the MagLab low-temperature cryostats, vacuum pumps, superconducting magnets, and other laboratory operations. Maintain and implement regular servicing records of equipment and chilled water closed-cycle systems and filters. Design and assemble new infrastructure in and around the instruments for operations and safety protocols. Transfer cryogenic fluids (liquid nitrogen and liquid helium) as needed and scheduled. Move and exchange compressed gas tanks. Maneuver 180-liter liquid nitrogen tanks (~260 - 300 lbs.) and liquid helium tanks (~145 lbs.) with manual gas cylinder cart, connect tanks to equipment, monitor tank pressure gauges.

Engage with the Cryogenic Facility in the Department of Physics for the purpose of scheduling and delivering liquid helium to the Microkelvin Laboratory and NHMFL AMRIS facility by truck. Provide assistance, when needed, in the filling of transport vessels.

Engage with the Instrument Shop in the Department of Physics for the design and assembly of specialized equipment and experimental equipment. Generate CAD drawings for the construction of equipment and tools needed in/around high magnetic field regions, including the use of a 3D printer.

Maintain safety standards and documents in the laboratories. Survey the equipment in the MagLab inventory. Attend training sessions for professional development and weekly group meetings. Collaborate with staff in the improvement and modernization of the facilities and labs. Purchase supporting laboratory supplies/tools, personal protective equipment, other safety equipment, and other selected items required to operate the facility efficiently. Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines. Maintain chemical inventory and manage chemical waste pick.

Assist of Department of Physics staff in their duties associated with the operation of the buildings and the delivery of major pieces of equipment. For example, assist in preparations associated with home football games and hurricane preparedness. Learn to operate the high bay crane and department forklift.

Assist in tours of the facilities for visitors, students, and staff.

Other duties as assigned.
