Opening Details

Williams College seeks a Research Associate/Project Coordinator as part of its participation in the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Just Futures Initiative. This is a part-time (~15 hours per week), two and a half-year term, grant-funded role that will support both the research and administrative aspects of the collaborative project. Participating partners are Williams College (including the Williams-Mystic Program), Brown University’s Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (CSSJ), and Connecticut’s Mystic Seaport Museum (MSM). It is expected that the Research Associate will spend time on the Williams main campus in Williamstown, as well as at the Williams-Mystic Program in Connecticut, though may be based primarily in one location or the other.

Titled “Reimagining New England Histories: Historical Injustice, Sovereignty and Freedom,” this Just Futures project aims to tell a different, more complete story of New England and its global connections--past, present, and future. The project will encompass wide-ranging activities, including a multi-partner academic research cluster, curricular coordination, development of a decolonial archive, relationship-building with regional African-American communities and Native American tribal nations, campus programming, and other components. The Research Associate will provide essential assistance in facilitating collaborations and research for all grant-funded opportunities as well as with the design and implementation of programming initiatives. Details about Williams’ participation in this collaboration are available here.

The Research Associate/Project Coordinator will assist with the project responsibilities described below. Depending on the selected candidate’s areas of expertise, the role will evolve to best draw upon specific strengths that will complement others’ roles. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Participating in and supporting ongoing grant-related research
  • Convening, planning, and documenting regular meetings of Williams personnel to ensure steady progress toward project goals
  • Coordinating communications and updates on the project
  • Helping enact processes to ensure equity of access and opportunity for faculty, staff, and students, and ensuring that the project aligns with institutional-level transformations in diversity, equity, and inclusion at the College.
  • Contributing to the development of a concrete vision and work plan for the decolonial memory archive
  • Conducting research and content writing for targeted parts of exhibition development and/or catalog production, particularly focused on historical content and contexts
  • Supporting student summer researchers and programming, including logistics of summer travel and accommodations, and mentoring about project work
  • Research-based writing and reporting, as well as grant tracking
