The School of World Studies uniquely combines faculty in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences whose research and teaching explore humanity’s origins, evolution, and diverse forms of cultural, linguistic, religious, and social expression. Offering degrees in Anthropology, Foreign Languages and Culture, International Studies, and Religious Studies, and an emphasis on intercultural communication, research and critical thinking, and international perspectives on real world issues, the School provides students with the knowledge, skills, and experience to succeed in our globalized world.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

Hiring for non-tenure Teaching Assistant Professor to support the Arabic and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies programs and to contribute to the educational mission of the School of World Studies.

Position Responsibilities

The School of World Studies in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a full-time non-tenure position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor to support the Arabic and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies programs and to contribute to the educational mission of the School of World Studies. The position requires teaching 8 courses per academic year (four courses per semester), including lower and upper division Arabic courses using proficiency-based, communicative language, student-centered pedagogy and curriculum that integrates Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial Arabic; and courses whose content contributes to Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. Must work with and foster the development of a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and successfully teach undergraduates in a public urban university setting. By the time of appointment, qualified candidates must have completed a PhD in Arabic Studies or closely related field, or its foreign equivalent. Qualified candidates must have native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, at least one colloquial Arabic dialect, and English.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Arabic Studies or closely related field

Native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, at least one colloquial Arabic dialect, and English.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
