Position Description

The Department of Physics at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), invites highly qualified, motivated, and well-organized applicants for a pool of part-time teaching appointments. There is currently a specific need for someone to teach our upper division electronics labs, and the person who does this will also be part of the pool of those teaching other courses.

At CSUDH, we celebrate and respect diversity in all forms that include every race, religion, gender, ethnicity, veterans, people with varied abilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. CSUDH is seeking applications from candidates who can demonstrate experience in teaching and working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to the University's mission, vision, and core values.

Department of Physics

Physics is the study of the natural world at its foundation. As such it is the basis of other disciplines such as biology, medicine, chemistry, computer science, geology, astronomy and engineering. Physicists study the world from the smallest particles of matter (quarks and leptons), nuclei, atoms and molecules; through the forces of motion which determine properties of solids, liquids, gases, and plasma; to descriptions of the behavior of matter on all scales up to stars, galaxies, and even the origin and fate of the universe. The department encourages student-faculty interaction in all these areas. Many of our students are in a track designed specifically to lead to a career or graduate study in electrical engineering.

The Position

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available.

The electronics course in the coming semester is mainly a lab-based course on analog electronics, designed around the classic text by Horowitz & Hill, and using a lab manual generated by the department. It covers topics ranging from the basics of using an oscilloscope, through Thevenin's Theorem, filters, and amplifiers. The successful candidate would likely be asked to return to teach the department's digital electronics course in Spring.

Please note that for Fall 2021 semester (starting August) is not like our typical semesters. A majority of our courses will take place online with the hope that courses will go back to face-to-face instruction for the spring 2022 semester, though this is still to be determined as information regarding the COVID19 pandemic and health conditions continues to change.

Responsibilities

Teach assigned courses in the department's curriculum and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.

Required Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. degree or extensive professional experience is required for teaching the upper-division core courses (300 - 400-level) in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.
