This is a full-time, temporary position.
** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.
Conditions of Employment
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum $3,528 - maximum $6,505 monthly.
The salary range by the department is: minimum $4,150 - maximum $4,500 monthly.
Under the direction of the Director of Archives and Special Collections in the University Library, the CSU Archivist supports efforts to preserve and make accessible archival materials relating to CSUDH collections and the records of the CSU System-wide Archives. The CSU Archivist will work on digitizing records, creating metadata for catalog records, organize physical and digital archival materials and create archival finding aids for those records relating to the CSU System-wide Archives.
Required Education: Equivalent to a completion of a high school education or equivalent certification.
Required Experience: Two (2) years of related experience in an archival or special collections environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Knowledge of and experience with best practices for digitization of archival materials, manuscripts, photographs, and other special collections holdings.
-Knowledge of archival theory and practice as demonstrated through experience.
-Demonstrated experience in archival appraisal, selection, arrangement and description, reference, and outreach activities.
-Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, computer operating systems, storage systems and file formats. Operation of scanning tools.
-Knowledge of Archives operations and their interactions with campus departments and the campus community.
-Ongoing understanding of current archival trends.
-Knowledge of national archival principles and archival ethics.
-Knowledge of how to physically process collections, generate finding aids and other cataloging records.
-Ability to participate in long range planning relating to the storage of archival collections.
-Experience responding to archival and special collections reference queries, using standard databases such as the Online Archive of California, and other relevant databases.
-Ability to work accurately with attention to detail; use direction in applying rules and metadata standards, regulations and procedures, and understanding of copyright in an archival setting; communicate effectively using standard English.
-Ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine the best course of action regarding Archives Reading Room rules.
-Ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
-Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of desktop application such as word processing and spreadsheets.
-Ability to handle rare materials with the necessary care.
-Bachelors degree or ALA-accredited Masters' degree in Library, Information Science, Archives Administration OR an advanced degree in an appropriate subject discipline with relevant special collections or archival training.
-Experience using Archives Space and CONTENTdm cataloging software.
-Ability to promote the CSU Archives through social media posts, creation of LibGuides, and presentations to potential users.
-Minimum of one year professional experience working in an academic library, historical society, archival institution, digitization setting or a research institution/company.
35% - Implement workflows that facilitate access to digitized archival records. This will focus on prioritizing which archival collections are digitized and cataloged. Includes the digitization, transcription and cataloging of CSU/CSUDH materials. Participates in the generation of metadata into systems for storage, discovery and display using ContentDM or other content management systems. Records include reports, correspondence, and public relations materials. The creation of metadata includes a description of each archival record and assigning subject headings for access. This is achieved by using national standards and best practices for the digitization, description, curation, access, and discoverability of archival collections.
30% - Following appropriate archival best practices, make CSU archival collections accessible through the organization, arrangement and description of those archival records. Generate archival finding aids (guides to collections) in Archives Space and the Online Archive of California. Perform basic preservation for collections.
15% - Perform Archives Reference Room duties including patron assistance, answer email or other reference or image requests. Locate archival materials in stacks. Maintain an orderly appearance of archival stacks.
15% - Work with CSU personnel to transfer paper and born digital materials to the archives. Works collaboratively with Archives staff to evaluate, appraise and supervise transfer archival materials. Accessions new CSU materials by bringing materials to the archives from outside sources and filling out appropriate forms to notate the origins of the records. Coordinates with archives staff to plan, prioritize, harvest and carry out projects to digitize CSU archival materials.
5% - Create Lib-Guides, blog posts, website text, social media posts, online and physical exhibitions and other publicity related materials. Other duties as assigned.
