The Labor/Grounds Specialist will support campus operations as a first response for groundskeeping tasks in assigned areas and will perform general grounds and maintenance work, to include grass cutting, weeding, landscaping, pest control, event set-ups, furniture and office moves, bulk recycling, and occasional custodial support.

We are seeking candidates with broad, general knowledge and experience in various aspects of groundskeeping as well as familiarity with regulations pertaining to use of herbicides and pesticides. This role needs to perform tasks independently and oversee assigned crews to ensure work is completed expeditiously and professionally. The right candidate will need strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working as part of a team since this position generally interacts with faculty, staff, students, Facilities trades personnel and outside contractors. Job duties include but may not be limited to:
  • Develop and execute plans to systematically cut grass within assigned geographical areas.
  • Primarily perform routine landscaping tasks within assigned areas including, but not limited to, weeding, pruning, and mulching, seeding, edging, trimming, planting, and applying herbicides, pesticides, chemicals, and fertilizers
  • Perform labor tasks in support of University operations, including but not limited to, event set-ups, furniture and equipment moves, driving vehicles, buses, and equipment, pest control, operating pressure washers, snow removal, bulk recycling removal, and litter pick-up on campus.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and motor driven tools and equipment. Perform general maintenance and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment to include, but not limited, to sharpening blades and changing oils, lubricants, filters, and belts.
  • Prepare sketches and scopes of work for projects in collaboration with supervisor.
  • Coordinate and schedules work for groups assisting with groundskeeping projects and duties. Train, educate and assist in the development of other staff members in landscaping tasks.
  • Order, maintain, utilize, and stores material and supplies necessary to perform duties.
  • Submit and coordinate work orders and projects for assigned tasks.
  • Support trades personnel and custodians, and performs other duties in support of University operations and special events as required.
  • Adheres to OSHA standards, employs safe practices, and follows safety policies/procedures. Uses PPE in a safe manner, sets examples for others, notifies supervisor of potential hazards, and demonstrates good housekeeping habits.
  • Support and promotes the University's sustainability efforts.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    ● One year of grounds maintenance experience, including demonstrated use of related tools and equipment.
    ● High school diploma or equivalent.
    ● General knowledge and experience in various aspects of groundskeeping.
    ● Familiarity with regulations pertaining to use of herbicides and pesticides.
    ● Ability to obtain a commercial pesticide certificate or license within 120 days of employment or possess a current commercial pesticide certificate or license (ex. pesticide applicator certificate, registered pesticide technician license).
    ● Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written instructions and perform basic math calculations.
    ● A current and valid driver's license and a safe driving record for the past three years.
    ● Demonstrated understanding trade and contractor sequencing/phasing of work.
    ● Demonstrated ability to perform work in a safe and appropriate manner.
    ● Basic computer skills to use email, work request, scheduling, and other software programs.
    ● Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
    ● Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

    Other Requirements:
    ● This position is classified as part of essential services. Individual is required to report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by a supervisor or when the individual has concerns related to their personal safety.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    ● Continued or continuing education in vocational training or related areas.
    ● Prior supervisory experience.
    ● Knowledge of safety procedures and familiarity with TMA (work order management) and resource 25 (scheduling) software.

    Physical Demands:
    ● Ability to move around work sites, climb ladders, scaffolds and walkways, and enter/exit trenches, crawl spaces, confined areas, roofs, and elevated areas.
    ● Move, lift and carry up to 75 pounds unassisted.
    ● Daily exposure to dust, dirt, weather and temperature changes. Position works indoors and outdoors.
    ● Must use proper safety equipment for hearing, head, eye, feet, hand, and body protection.
    ● Use of mechanical and power equipment.
