Position Information

This is a full-time, temporary position.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Conditions of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum $3,796 - maximum $5,369 monthly.

Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the Director, University Advisement Center, the incumbent provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the undergraduate student population to support in retention, closing the achievement gap, and degree completion. Additionally, the incumbent supports and advises students, provides advising interventions, makes recommendation on individual cases to resolve student problems within established parameters, regulations and guidelines, and tracks each student cohort thereafter to ensure efficient degree completion. Furthermore, the incumbent will collaborate with other UAC advisors to plan, coordinate, and implement one-on-one and interactive group workshops designed specifically to support optimal time to degree completion (New Student Orientation, Charge on to Graduation, Strategies Towards Educational Progress and Success, Freshman Advising for Successful Toros, Toro Explore, etc.). Incumbent will provide information related to student aptitudes, interests and abilities to ensure proficiency in class level Student Advising Learning Outcomes.

Qualifications

Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior; the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.

Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

- Sensitivity to transitional issues and needs among first-year/first-generation college students
- Ability to multi-task with effective time management and organization skills
- Ability to advise students individually on student-related matters.
- Ability to complete assignments within defined instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
- Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.
- Ability to use standard office software, including spreadsheet and database applications to generate analytical reports.
- Demonstrate ability to use creativity in generating business solutions in a fast-paced working environment.
- Ability to function effectively as part of a high performance team.

Responsibilities

50% - Provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the undergraduate student population. - Supports students in timely degree completion. - Provides information related to student aptitudes, interests and abilities to ensure proficiency in class level Student Advising Learning Outcomes. - Supports a caseload of undergraduate students by providing clear action steps for degree completion.

25% - Supports Academic Advisors in advising of undocumented students and undeclared students - Support students in navigating their academic plan while connecting them to the on-campus support network - Keeps open lines of communication with campus partners on policies and procedures affecting the undocumented and undeclared student population. - Provides feedback on student concerns and needs; and stays up to date on policy updates and procedures affecting this population. - Assists in the coordination of communication updates on print and digital mediums (emails, website, brochures, etc.)

10% - Supports Academic Advisors in the development of programs and services that focus on growth mindset and belongingness for first year and transfer students. - Assists in organizing and coordinating of co-curricular programs to support first-year and transfer students' successful transition to CSUDH. - Supports the coordination of recruitment and training of the Peer Coach program. - Provides support for students experiencing academic, personal, economic and social crises, which may impact academic performance; and assists with student access to counseling services and other on-campus support networks.

10% - Assists in the collection and organization of data to develop reports and executive summaries. - Assists in maintaining student advising records through EAB/SSC. - Keep accurate reports of student advising sessions. - Provides Director with weekly updates on progress for semester- and year-end reports. - Collects data to be used for reports and executive summaries under general supervision of Director.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
