Position Summary

The University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Population Health invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the field of Avian Pathology. Responsibilities include sharing diagnostic services in avian histopathology with another pathologist, collaborative and independent research in poultry diseases, and instruction in graduate programs including the Masters of Avian Medicine degree and online Masters of Animal Health and Medicine degree programs. In addition, the faculty member is expected to work well as a team member and collaborate within the department providing support to clinical faculty and field veterinarians with the aim of solving problems in the poultry industry. A laboratory will be provided.
The Department or Population Health is a multi-disciplinary department composed of 4 units. The position is located at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center ( PDRC ) in Athens, Georgia. The PDRC is part of the diagnostic network for the poultry industry of Georgia. In addition, the PDRC actively provides support to the poultry industry throughout the United States and in many countries around the world. The environment is highly interactive and productive with close ties to all basic science departments, federal research facilities and other academic institutions nearby.
Rank, salary and terms of appointment will be dependent upon qualifications and experience of the applicant.

Additional Requirements

To be considered at the rank of Assistant Professor, candidates must have board certification or be eligibile for board certification from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the American College of Poultry Veterinarians.

To be considered at the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must have board certification from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the American College of Poultry Veterinarians and at least 5 full years in rank at the Assistant Professor level before the start date. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Work experience (minimum 1 year of experience) in one or more of the following areas is desirable: poultry pathology, veterinary pathology, avian histopathology, avian diseases, epidemiology or preventive health management related to poultry production.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

A PhD with an emphasis on poultry health and management is preferred.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

This position will share with another pathologist diagnostic histopathology that arises from clinical necropsy cases submitted to PDRC Diagnostic services laboratory, field necropsies, and samples that are mailed in from the poultry industry in Georgia, the United States and around the world. In addition, this position will provide histology services to colleagues in the department, UGA, and private industry for research projects.
This position will contribute and participate in the instruction of PhD, MS, MAM, and MAHM graduate students. The main responsibility in teaching avian histopathology will be shared with the other pathologist. This position will lecture in additional courses based on the candidate’s interests and expertise.
Collaborative research is required and a successful candidate will be expected to attract extramural funding for independent research projects.
