The Division of Student Affairs’ role is to enhance and support students learning experience here at UWL . We work closely with faculty, staff, community members, alumni and most importantly, students to provide quality programs and services which promote learning, leadership, involvement, service, and the celebration of diversity. The Division includes several departments: Campus Child Center, Counseling and Testing, Student Health Center, Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreational Sports, Residence Life, Student Life, University Centers, and the Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students office. The staff of the Division is truly student-centered and concerned about the holistic development of the student.

The university is seeking two qualified candidates that demonstrate exceptional coaching abilities in basketball and will be placed, based on preference and demonstrated history of success, for either the Men’s or Women’s basketball teams. The successful candidates must also possess qualifications for a collateral assignment in either the Admissions Office as an Admissions Counselor or in the Athletics Department as a Diversity & Inclusion Liaison.

These unique positions will be a deployed as a first of its kind champion for the basketball teams and leading Athletics Department initiatives to promote a more diverse and inclusive environment for employees and student-athletes by aligning recruitment efforts in Admissions as well as promoting and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in UWL’s Athletics Department. Successful candidates will need to have demonstrated a successful career of working with student-athletes and employees of every background on enhancing their awareness and commitment to inclusion efforts.

Required Qualifications

● Bachelor’s Degree.
● Basketball coaching or playing experience at high school, club, or collegiate level.
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills such as excellent written and public speaking.
● Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
● Ability to lift/transport materials up to 35lbs.
● Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
● Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

● Knowledge of NCAA Division III and WIAC rules.
● Collegiate coaching or playing experience.
● Collegiate recruiting experience.
● Strong organizational and event planning skills
● Ability to adapt and manage multiple competing priorities
● Ability to use and learn multiple computer technologies (such as Peoplesoft, ImageNow, TargetX CRM, Microsoft Office)
● Experience in marketing, admissions or a related area of higher education

Physical Demands

Lifting and transporting materials up to 35 lbs. is required.

Working conditions and environment

Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.

Admissions Counselor: Typical work hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. However, numerous evening and weekend hours will be required. The ability to travel throughout the Midwest by automobile is also required.

Miscellaneous Information

Successful candidates will receive two appointments at UWL . One appointment for the Coach will be for 50% time during the 9-Month Academic Calendar; the other position, (for either the D&I Equity Liasion or Multicultural Admissions Counselor), will be for 50% over the 12-Month Calendar Year.

Assistant Coach

Duties to Support Responsibility

As an Assistant Coach, the successful candidates will assist with the management of daily operations of the Division III intercollegiate basketball programs competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with responsibilities including, but not limited to: assisting in the planning, recruiting, coaching, developing, implementing, and administering of the basketball program to meet university and department objectives. They will also be responsible for various administrative tasks associated with running an intercollegiate basketball program, potentially including, but not limited to, the planning of team travel, managing equipment and/or video and technology needs, and coordinating camps. The Assistant coaches must conduct themselves in such a way as to enhance respect for the university, Athletics Department, UWL basketball program, and UWL student-athletes.

Admissions Counselor

Duties to Support Responsibility

In the Department of Admissions, the Student Services Coordinator, with a working title of Multicultural Admissions Counselor, will report to the Director of Admissions. This position plays a significant role in the recruitment and outreach activities of the Admissions Office. Our goal is to increase the number of applicants to the University and enroll a talented and diverse student body. The Admissions Counselor will meet with prospective students and their parents, high school counselors, various groups on and off-campus, alumni, and other contacts to promote the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse opportunities. Particular attention will be given to targeted populations that add to the diversity of the student body, including underrepresented minority students and athletes. A significant part of the recruitment process will be establishing and nurturing relationships that can serve as a conduit for students to learn about UW-La Crosse. This staff member will collaborate with other Admissions Office staff members, working together to coordinate recruitment activities. Extensive travel is required, especially during the fall and spring recruitment seasons.

As the Diversity & Inclusion Equity Liaison, this person will act as an active resource for current student-athletes and department staff members; develop relationships and check-in processes with Athletics Department staff to further diversity goals; work with the Division of Diversity & Inclusion to develop resources to facilitate and train the Athletics Department around diversity-related issues; and regularly assess the needs and climate of the Athletics Department’s staff and student-athletes to better foster an inclusive environment.
