Civic Engagement Fellow

Position Details

Reporting to the Director of the Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life, the Civic Engagement Fellow will work closely with staff and offices across campus, including the Civic Engagement Minor, Jewett Center for Community Partnerships, Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Service Learning and the Sustainability Office, to engage students and support faculty in civic engagement endeavors.

This one-year fellowship provides support for civic engagement activities on Wesleyan’s campus.

The Civic Engagement Fellow will undertake projects that support civic engagement and add to his/her own professional experience.
The position starts on or around July 1, 2021. This fellowship is not eligible for student loan deferment.

Responsibilities include:

Lead Allbritton Center student outreach efforts; attend student fairs, WSA and student group meetings.

Refer individual students and student organizations interested in civic engagement to appropriate community or campus partners.

Help design activities and programs for Office of Community Service student organizations, and support their public programming.

Help maintain and identify online resources and tools for student leaders and students interested in civic engagement.

Attend Allbritton Community Advisory Board and Engagement Council meetings, record minutes, and provide an “on-the-ground perspective” informed by engagement with students and student groups.

Represent University civic engagement interests at public meetings and events.
Coordinate all communications for the Allbritton Center, including but not limited to the Wesleyan ENGAGE blog, newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, posters, and other print material, while also sharing information via other Wesleyan channels.

Share events, resources, and student stories to the campus community and greater Middletown community.

Assist with designing and developing reports about University civic engagement activities
.
Assist with the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive database of community partners for all civic engagement activities.

Provide data collection and reporting, tech assistance, and event support for civic engagement efforts at Wesleyan.

Assist with the implementation of cross-departmental special initiatives such as E2020; support includes institutional partner communication, coordinating speaker series and collection of assignments and student communication.

Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and experience working with civic engagement initiatives, community service projects or social entrepreneurship programs or an equivalent combination of education, training and work experience (may include work or volunteer experience while a student).

Demonstrated strong interest and commitment to civic engagement.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a range of partners; and creative problem-solving skills.

Effective communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects effectively and simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Proficiency in MS Office Suite of applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Demonstrated experience with social media and blogging tools, preferably including WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter .


Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in an educational setting is strongly preferred.
