The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (DBSS) at the new University of Houston College of Medicine (UHCOM) seeks a psychologist or other clinically prepared behavioral scientist to join us in developing advanced biopsychosocial medical student training and new models of behavioral healthcare for the underserved. A doctorate and license eligibility in Texas are required and the applicant should demonstrate experience and capabilities necessary to collaborate effectively with physician and non-physician course leaders. At this time, all faculty appointments in the College of Medicine are non-tenure track. The College of Medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.

UHCOM welcomed our first class of thirty in July 2020. Class sizes will incrementally increase over the next five years and a new, state of the art medical school building opens in 2022. DBSS is one of four departments in the medical school. Faculty represent psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, medical humanities, sociology and compassionate care. We see the doctor-patient relationship as therapeutic and prepare our graduates to have meaningful, effective, and satisfying interactions with patients.

The majority of responsibilities for this position will be for medical student teaching, curricular innovation and academic service. Twenty-five percent of effort will be directed to clinical service. Scholarly productivity is expected from DBSS clinician educators in the forms of curricular research, grant writing and contributing your expertise for collaboration on UHCOM projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

Educational Mission (75% Effort)
• Collaborate on or lead development of community and clinically integrated models of behavioral healthcare that will incorporate student clinical education.
• Collaborate on or lead UHCOM faculty to integrate BSS content into advanced medical training/clerkship experiences.
• Contribute to the integration of BSS content into the first 18 months of medical student training in our Integrated Clinical Cases; Physician, Patients, and Populations; and Clinical Focus Sessions courses.
• Facilitate and develop/co-develop trainee reflective and skills building activities for professionalism, wellness and relationship centered care.
• Supervise psychology graduate students.
• Contribute to and potentially lead applications for sponsored curriculum innovation projects.
Direct Patient Care (25% Effort)
• Evaluate, treat, and consult on the behavioral health care of patients in our sites as developed.
• Develop behavioral health integration and other clinical protocols and guidelines.
• Contribute to clinical quality improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with other medical and behavioral health providers.

Rank and salary commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Qualifications :

• Licensed or license eligible in the State of Texas (ww.bhec.texas.gov)
• Doctoral degree in the behavioral sciences
• Academic experiences that prepare the applicant to collaborate with physician and other medical school faculty to incorporate behavioral science knowledge and skills into medical student education. Examples of such experiences would include but are not limited to prior medical or residency academic appointments, graduate course leadership, or supervision of graduate students in medically related settings.
• Clinical experiences to lead or collaborate on development of new models of integrated behavioral health care.
• Applicants seeking appointment at associate professor will demonstrate development, implementation and scholarship in one or more educational areas.
