Technician, School of Design Digital Production

Pratt Institute is seeking a Digital Production Technician who is a creative problem solver with excellent communication, technical, and organizational skills to support the School of Design's Digital Production Labs. The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day operation of three digital labs, overseeing student and faculty in the safe, efficient, and creative use of production technology, and will assist in training for students and faculty across all areas of digital fabrication. Working collaboratively with technicians, managers, faculty, and academic leadership, the Digital Fabrication Technician will support the use and maintenance of equipment and facilities, ensuring the implementation of best practices for the purpose of contributing to a fulfilling and well-rounded design education.

Key Essential Duties include the following:
  • Oversee student employees regarding use of all Rapid Prototyping Lab machines, including laser cutters, CNC machines, 3D printers, knitting machines as well as any computer interfaced production machines and equipment that are added to the shop and labs in the future.
  • Oversee usage and maintenance of a variety of equipment and materials (i.e., saws, sanders, laser cutters, CNC machines, 3D printers, plastics, metal, etc.) used in Shop, CNC, Laser, and Knitting labs.
  • Demonstrate skills in 3D modeling software, CNC tool-pathing, CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers and Shop equipment use. Also demonstrate skills in mold making, casting, 3D fabrication, finishing techniques and model making for all materials presently in use in the shop and labs (i.e., wood, plastics, metal, etc.)
  • Supervise students, faculty, staff and all other users in the Shop and Labs.
  • Manage a team of student employees to monitor and manage the Laser Lab, Knitting Lab, 3D printers and CNC Lab.
  • Establish cleaning, maintenance and safety protocols and make recommendations for digital lab improvements, including computer and machine purchases.

This is a Technical Local 153 position. Weekend work required during the fall and spring semesters. Some overtime work required at the end of the fall and spring semesters.
