This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

Under the administrative guidance of the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President for University Advancement (AVPUA), is responsible for administration of the university's development program. The incumbent designs, manages, and provides oversight for the programs, directs the personnel, and fundraising abilities of the university's development program and office, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, employee giving, foundation and corporate giving, advancement services and special projects. In addition, the incumbent may serve as the leader of the division in the absence of the Vice President.

This position shall work with Deans and other academic and administrative leaders to identify and cultivate development opportunities for the entire university while also serving as the campus representative for partnerships with the business and surrounding community. The incumbent is also responsible for being a conduit between external stakeholders who have a passion for giving and aligning their interests with the specific needs of the university as represented by campus administrative personnel. This position requires advanced skills in strategic planning; administration; identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors for immediate and/or deferred gifts and creating the entrepreneurial environment necessary to support the university's goals.

The AVPUA will be responsible for building, managing, and inspiring a team of 14 professionals to secure increasing levels of development success.


The Associate Vice President for University Advancement should be an energetic self-starter, bold, creative, results-oriented, and possess enthusiasm, determination, a demonstrated ability to manage multiple and complex priorities, and be committed to team building and collegial work, with increasing levels of responsibility and demonstrated success. The individual must possess excellent interpersonal skills and a minimum of eight (8) plus years of professional related experience. Graduation from a four-year college or university.

Incumbent must demonstrate possession of the following:
- Extensive knowledge of corporate, foundation, and individual identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
- Ability to manage varied tasks simultaneously
- Exceptional interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, especially to interpret and present the accomplishments and goals of the university
- Strong organizational, administrative, and planning skills
- Ability to organize, inspire, manage, assess, and supervise a diverse team of professionals


45% - Development program management - designs, directs and asses the personnel and fundraising activities of the university's development program and office; plans, develops, enhances, implements, and administers the university's fundraising initiatives consistent with system and national best practices.

35% - Donor solicitation and stewardship - provides leadership in identification, cultivation, strategizing, and soliciting prospective donors for private gifts, including deferred gifts; solicitation responsibilities encompass major gifts, individual gifts, corporate/foundation gifts and partnerships; planned giving, employee giving, and special project and campaign funding. Oversees donor stewardship activities that include tracking, recognition programs, and special events.

15% - Development leadership - provides strategic oversight of fundraising priorities, projects and programs; works successfully with a variety of critical constituencies, including administrators, faculty, researchers, volunteers, alumni, committees, corporations, foundations, external organizations, and community leaders with an emphasis on meeting university development goals.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
