The Department of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine seeks aPET Technologistto work under general supervision with demonstrated ability to provide quality patient care and perform procedures on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. Perform clinic and research PET/CT procedures as defined by departmental protocols. Assist in the training of student technologists. Demonstrate continuous self-improvement, make effective contributions to the department/division, and adhere to departmental policies and procedures. This position reports to the PET clinical manager.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

Radiopharmaceutical Management

  • Verifies quality and quantity of appropriate radiopharmaceutical. Accurately calculates and measures appropriate activity of radiopharmaceutical with dose calibrator.
  • Calculates appropriate application of radioactive materials; determines accurate volume or unity necessary to deliver the prescribed radioactive dose.
  • Records the appropriate radiopharmaceutical information on a permanent departmental record.

Diagnostic and Research Procedures

  • Performs all diagnostic PET and nuclear medicine procedures.
  • Consistently selects appropriate equipment and protocol required for patient’s examination with regard to patient’s age, development, and study requested according to established guidelines. Routinely maneuvers patient into optimal position(s) according to established guidelines.
  • Consistently demonstrates appropriate knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy by obtaining complete and accurate series of diagnostic and high quality images within an agreed upon time frame and as per written protocol. Routinely and accurately obtains reproducible measurements needed per protocol using established manual or computerized methods. Consistently provides interpreting physicians with preliminary findings and completed results in a timely fashion.

Quality Control

  • Ensures that equipment is running at its optimum peak.
  • Consistently and accurately performs quality control on imaging and monitoring equipment as prescribed in written policies and procedures.
  • Consistently monitors any equipment malfunction or abnormality and performs corrective actions if possible.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree or equivalent. One (1) year of directly related work. Nuclear Medicine Technologist license by the Maryland Board of Physicians required. Nuclear Medicine Technology Certifying Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART)- Nuclear Medicine Certification and Registration required. Must have current CPR certification. Must maintain certifications/licenses throughout duration of employment.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals and a thorough knowledge of nuclear medicine procedures.
  • General knowledge of procedures and equipment used in Nuclear Medicine/PETCT diagnostic procedures.
  • Moderate analytical ability required to calculate and prepare appropriate dosages of radio pharmaceuticals, analyze test results, and perform quality assurance tests. Work, however, is performed under physician supervision.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other hospital employees.

Physical Requirements:

Requires ability to stand, turn, and stoop while operating high technological instrumentation. Ability to assist patients by lifting or turning to achieve desired position for obtaining test results and lifting of supplies and equipment.

Working Conditions:

Possible exposure to communicable disease, hazardous and radioactive materials, with little likelihood of harm when health and safety precautions are not followed. Work requires the use of lab coats, uniforms and or/protective clothing, including gloves, gowns, masks, protective eyewear, and radiation safety devices.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
