Research Technologist

The Department of International Health, Global Disease Epidemiology and Control seeks aResearch Technologist, to follow protocols under the supervision of a faculty investigator. Perform laboratory tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments, making minor adjustments as required. Work with biohazardous materials. Performs laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include various assays, specialized techniques such as PCR and other molecular techniques, study specific molecular microbiology, microbiology (e.g. culture and identifications of specific bacteria), ELISA, immunoblot methods, electrophoresis, and basic tissue culture, following established procedures or protocols.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    Performs microbiology and molecular biology based tests specific to projects. Performs microbiology and sample processing as required by specific studies. Responsible for routine laboratory maintenance, preparing solutions, reagents following standard laboratory formulas and procedures and ordering supplies. Prepares sterile media such as agar in plates, jars, or test tubes for use in growing bacterial cultures. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments. This position may involve traveling to other countries for short periods for capacity building, training lab personnel and implementing the laboratory methods specific to projects. Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate. Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations. Supervise Work study students if recruited.

Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Master’s degree in biology, health sciences or related field. At least 2 years relevant laboratory experience. Experience and knowledge in basic microbiology, molecular microbiology and some experience working in laboratory is mandatory. Experience and knowledge in molecular biology. Experience in enteric microbiology and basic knowledge in tissue cultures. Experience in DNA isolation, conventional and quantitative PCR, primer design, data management and analysis using statistical software. Experience working in small laboratory and skills in basic laboratory methods. Experience with enteric microbiology, and ELISA.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Pipetting or pipet skills are required. Skills with Microsoft Access, Word and Excel, and graphing software. Ability in statistical data analysis.

Working Conditions: Biohazardous conditions such as the risk of microbial contamination, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals may be present in this work environment which mandate attention to safety considerations.

Physical Requirements:

    Near vision to see objects clearly within 20 inches. Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from eyes. Full spectrum vision to identify and distinguish color. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s) for example, using a keyboard. Handling by seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hand or hands.Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
