The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) is part of the Education Department in the School of Medicine. OCME provides accredited continuing medical education to healthcare professionals.
The School of Medicine is seeking a Financial Manager who will report to the Director of OCME, and is a member of OCME’s senior management team. The Financial Manager supervises the accounting team, and is responsible for oversight of all accounting processes, developing and monitoring the annual operating and capital budgets, and works closely with faculty and staff from throughout the School of Medicine and the University.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Supervises team of
accounting and finance staff. Supervisory responsibilities include
interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, evaluating, and
initiating disciplinary action as needed, according to HR policies
and procedures.
Implemented new accounting
work processes to streamline workflow and increase financial
internal controls effectiveness.
Assist in the development
of, review the effectiveness of, and implement new standard
operating procedures.
Develop annual OCME
operating budget.
Create and analyze profit
and loss reports.
Review financial reports
for specific continuing medical education activities as well as the
overall OCME operating budget.
Perform cost analysis for
business units within the department.
Review and provide advice
on contractual agreements with sponsors and other
parties.
Collaborate with the
University’s Office of Research Administration to oversee OCME’s
NIH and other sponsored contracts.
Review and approve all
financial transactions including AP, AR, purchasing and general
ledger transactions.
Monitor daily cash flow
reports
Create monthly and annual
financial reports for senior management.
Review and analyze
financial and variance reports to advise senior management of
financial trends.
Serve as the financial
point of contact with JHU internal auditors, SOM Business Office,
JHU Treasurer Office and JHU Tax office.
Work with the Office of
Information Technology to optimize work process and web
design.
- Develop an understanding of the workings of the office, regulatory requirements of the University as well as of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or other related field.
- Five (5) years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.
- Additional education in a related field may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree and supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience working in a higher education setting preferred.
- Background/knowledge
preferred in:
- SAP
- Grant negotiations
- Federal and private contract and grant compliance
- Human resource administration
- Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) regulations
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to develop spreadsheets for data analysis, forecasting, and reporting.
- Demonstrated ability analyze complex data.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams of professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to use enterprise accounting system (such as SAP).
- Strong oral and written communication skill
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to communicate effectively in person using spoken English.
- Must be able to communicate via telephone and videoconferencing (such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams).
- Must be able to carry out support of programs that require extensive work at a computer.
- Must be able to manipulate Excel or similar spreadsheet software programs to analyze data and prepare reports
- Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10lbs. or less.
- Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30lbs. or less.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- 2 exempt and 1 non-exempt staff
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
