Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director for Administrative Services within Student Engagement and Campus Life, the Assistant Director for Student Center Recreation joins a team of professionals who uplift the Aspirations for Student Learning (Commit to unwavering curiosity, Pursue self-understanding and integrity, Practice civility, Prepare for a life of courageous leadership, and Embrace Ut Prosim as a way of life), the Six Dimension of Well-Being, the Principles of Community and ExperienceVT throughout all responsibilities of the position. The Assistant Director for Student Center Recreation oversees and coordinates dynamic recreation opportunities and programs for Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL), overseeing the operation of the Squires Student Center recreation center (Breakzone) and the implementation of small-scale and series programs in the student center. The Assistant Director is responsible for customer service, administrative and fiscal processes, policy, marketing, programming, supervision and staffing systems, assessment, and general oversight of the recreation center. They will train, mentor, and evaluate approximately 15 student staff who help manage Breakzone and programs. The Assistant Director also prepares and manages annual facility operation, income, and student wage budgets averaging over $200k. Customer service is of critical importance to the successful operation of the Breakzone, and the Assistant Director will provide excellent customer service and train student staff in a customer-focused philosophy. The Assistant Director will implement and manage programming in the Breakzone and other student center locations that offers enriching student engagement experiences, while also proposing and evaluating opportunities to improve and/or grow the current programming. This position serves on the SECL Lead Team and the Administrative Services team.

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in education, administration/management, recreation, higher education, or related field. Previous management experience in program and service delivery, facility management, and/or event management. Supervisory experience. Demonstrated customer service experience in a fast-paced environment. Previous fiscal experience including budget management/oversight. Demonstrated ability to manage large sums of money and contracts with a high degree of accuracy. General computer knowledge and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters in Higher Education and Student Affairs. Experience in higher education student programming, service delivery, and/or operations. Experience in event planning and management. Previous experience supervising and directing the work of students. Recreation management experience in a college or educational setting.
