Hollins University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chemistry Department Technician. The position reports to the chair of the department, and supervises up to six student assistants.

Technical responsibilities include setup and cleanup of chemistry labs to align with course curriculum; placing and receiving orders for chemicals, glassware, and other equipment in support of lab instruction; arranging for equipment service; maintaining material safety data sheets for chemicals and inventory of all items; providing research support for professors and students; identifying, storing, and arranging for disposal of all hazardous waste generated in the department; ordering, receiving, and obtaining permits for transportation of tax-free ethanol from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority; storing, dispensing, maintaining records, and filing an annual usage report of tax-free ethanol in accordance with state and U.S. Department of Treasury regulations; and monitoring department compliance with OSHA regulations.

Other responsibilities include completing required forms for the university Business Office, overseeing office supplies, and submitting maintenance requests.

Successful applicants will have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and proficiency with Microsoft Office. Candidates will demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, problem-solving, project management, organizational, and multitasking skills. Additionally, applicants must have the ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines and work independently without supervision at times. They must also possess the manual dexterity needed to manipulate and move large, heavy objects. Preferred candidates will have experience in a similar position or laboratory environment.
