Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Dining Services, this position provides direct, operational and administrative oversight for multiple residential and retail dining venues. This oversight extends to sorority dining and five retail venues. Assists the Director of Dining Services with providing leadership and vision to the program, with a particular emphasis on daily operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides daily leadership and guidance to sorority dining and retail dining locations.

  • Works with senior leadership to strategically plan for fiscally sound operations, excellent customer service, and effective staff development.

  • Increases employee effectiveness through personal and delegated efforts by recruiting, selecting, orientating, training, and developing staff. Effectively communicates program values and objectives. Assigns tasks effectively and upholds accountability standards.

  • Evaluates direct-report subordinate employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with department standard operating procedures.

  • Provides strategic vision and planning for the campus dining program. Consistently seek opportunities for growth and improvement in operations. Stays informed on current trends in the foodservice industry and finds opportunities to incorporate new and innovative ideas.

  • Studies and understands food allergies and dietary preferences. Serves as a point of contact and subject matter expert for the campus community.

  • Assists venue leadership with the hiring of vacant operations positions. Reviews applications, conducts interviews, and engages with team members to ensure program quality, provide role modeling, address concerns and review presentation. Serves as the primary Dining point of contact as it pertains to Workday payroll approvals and hiring functions.

  • Provides hands-on coaching, coordinated trainings and mentoring for all operations staff.

  • Conducts routine operations staff meetings to keep staff engaged and informed.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for Blackboard Transact product and reporting functions. Manages all CloudPOS menu updates and mobile ordering processes.

  • Assists venue leadership with the planning and execution of special events.

  • Assists in selection of food vendors and suppliers to ensure we are keeping up with current trends.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree required, Bachelors degree and/or culinary training preferred. Either five or more years of experience in food service, including supervisory responsibilities, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Culinary or operations management experience in a college or university setting preferred. ServSafe Certification required. Instructor/Proctor status preferred. Previous Workday and Blackboard Transact experience is preferred.

Proven supervisory experience: Ability to supervise a large staff off full time, part time, and student employees.

Physical Requirements:

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.



Working Conditions:

  • The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

  • The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

  • The worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.



Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Work Schedule: Varying hours. Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and in meeting the needs of Washington and Lee University Dining Services.
