Department: EXT/ANRCD/NR/WGNHS/WGNHS
Location: Madison
Categories: Information Systems/Technology, Extension, Outreach, Public Engagement

Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History (WGNHS) was established in 1853 and conducts earth-science surveys, field studies, and research. We provide objective scientific information about the geology, mineral resources, and water resources of Wisconsin. We collect, interpret, disseminate, and archive natural resource information. We communicate the results of our activities through publications, technical talks, and responses to inquiries from the public. These activities support informed decision-making by government, industry, business, and individual citizens. The WGNHS is a part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Technical Operations, the web developer provides full-stack technical expertise to guide decisions related to information access and management, and is responsible for the successful design, development, implementation, and support of custom and off-the-shelf web applications. In addition, the developer collaborates with our technology support team to ensure support and technical sustainability of the applications and our information management infrastructure.

Guided by our strategic goals of increasing the access to and manageability of our information, the primary responsibilities of the developer include maintaining and extending existing public-facing web applications and associated development infrastructure, as well as developing a new database-integrated application for the management of our geoscience records.

The first two years of this appointment will be focused on planning, building, and deploying web applications and associated infrastructure. Subsequently, priorities will shift to application and infrastructure maintenance. Accordingly, this position is currently anticipated to be a two-year appointment, with possibility for renewal.
