Position Function

The Behavioral Specialist provides continuous support to the overall educational environment by utilizing effective behavioral strategies to address student behaviors. The Behavioral Specialist collaborates with university faculty, Burris educators, pre-service teachers, other professional staff and administrators to provide outlets and avenues for students to communicate, develop skills and build healthy relationships in the school community to support the vision and mission of the school.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or education from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

At least one year of experience with applied behavior analysis in a clinical or school setting.

Minimum Other

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Master’s Degree with a major in psychology or a related field from an accredited institution; valid Board-Certified Behavior Analyst ( BCBA ) professional certificate.

Preferred Experience

Three years or more as a behavior specialist.

Pre-Employment Screening

Requires successful completion of a background check and education verification.

Identify students in need of support using approved data points (Child Find) to ensure the appropriate students are identified for intervention.

Design and oversee implementation of situational appropriate crisis prevention and intervention plans as well as constructive classroom management techniques.

Instruct, model and evaluate student behavior. Check for understanding using a variety of analytical methods that incorporate prior knowledge, life experience and interests to make adjustments to expectations.

Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress. Communicate expectations, student achievement and develop strategies for improvement or reinforcement of classroom behavioral objectives in the home environment.

Monitor and assess the progress of students on a regular basis. Communicate through student conferences, parent conferences, case conferences and established reporting procedures concerning specific behavioral situations involving their children.
