The University of Vermont Health Network

Search for Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer

Burlington, VT

The University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking leader to join as the inaugural Network Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) who can set a vision for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for an integrated health care delivery system serving Vermont and Northern New York. As UVMHN continues to establish itself as an innovative leader in health care delivery and health care reform, the CDIO will execute a holistic plan to ensure that DEI is systematically embedded across the health system.

UVMHN is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and the CDIO will arrive at a time of great promise for defining a future path. Reporting to the President and CEO of UVMHN, the CDIO will oversee comprehensive DEI programs conceived and executed within an affiliated health system encompassing six hospitals, a multispecialty medical group and a home health and hospice agency. Working in partnership with Network senior leadership, a team of equity practitioners across affiliate organizations and galvanizing champions throughout every level of the organization, the CDIO will conceptualize and help facilitate a strategic plan that supports the creation of a culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive for all providers and staff, patients and the communities served by the Network.

Created in 2012 and subsequently expanded via several affiliation agreements, the UVM Health Network has evolved as a locally led, nonprofit, highly integrated health care delivery system that is committed to preserving access to high quality, needed health care and services in a largely rural area. The CDIO will be charged with coordinating initiatives and maximizing resources to further each affiliate’s efforts to promote DEI in ways that are both responsive to the unique needs of individual communities and focused on Network impact and cohesion. The CDIO must develop long-range plans that demonstrate a commitment to transparency and an understanding of the context in which each affiliate operates, while articulating the vision for DEI and the needs of the Network in a coordinated and synergistic fashion.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to build successful relationships across a matrixed organization and have the flexibility, diplomacy, stamina, and resilience to excel in an environment that is nimble, complex, and highly dispersed. While experience working within a clinical setting is strongly preferred, UVMHN is open to considering candidates from within the academy and/or health sciences and those who have exceptional leadership credentials within organizations similar to UVMHN in scale and complexity. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of and appreciation for the significance of UVMHN’s role in the region and will possess an inspiring vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion consistent with the Network’s mission, commitment to the pursuit of excellence and dedication to improving the health of the people in the communities served.
