The University of South Alabama Health System (known as USA Health) based in Mobile, AL, the only academic health system along the upper Gulf Coast that serves as a major tertiary referral center for multiple states, announces a national search for a Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) to oversee the educational, operational, financial, regulatory, and overall effectiveness of the GME program.  Presently, USA Health has 270+ physicians in training across 23 programs (12 residencies and 11 fellowships), with additional residencies and fellowships anticipated to launch in the next few years.  Seventy-nine new residents will begin their training at USA Health in the summer of 2021.  Additionally, USA Health has approximately 75 medical students whose training involves physician supervision.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine/VP of Medical Affairs, the new DIO/Associate Dean will join USA Health at an exciting time of growth and innovation and will provide leadership oversight for all GME-related activities and for all house staff.  He/she will champion the achievement of a strategic vision to be a highly respected medical education program, thereby enhancing USA Health's academic reputation, attracting top faculty and students, and recruiting and retaining highly trained physicians to serve the community.  The DIO/Associate Dean will inspire excellence in teaching with a focus on creating an optimal learning and training environment for both faculty and students.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Interested candidates must be either a board-certified physician (an M.D., D.O.) with a medical license to practice medicine without restriction or an experienced GME administrative leader with a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Education, Health Administration or related field.

Proven track record in GME program development and administration, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience directly related to the strategic development and administration of graduate medical education programs. Administrative experience with GME programs and budgets is preferred.

OVERVIEW OF USA HEALTH:

USA Health is an academic health system consisting of a 406-licensed bed University Hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center, a 152-licensed bed freestanding Children’s & Women’s Hospital with a 98-bed Level III NICU, a freestanding Cancer Institute, a growing physician network with 300+ providers, and numerous outpatient care sites.  USA Health is the only academic health system along the upper Gulf Cost, is the training ground for the USA College of Medicine, and serves as a major tertiary referral center for southeast Alabama, southeast Mississippi, and portions of northwest Florida.  With more than 3,900 staff members, USA Health is Mobile’s second largest health system serving patients across a 50+ county region with a focus on key specialties in Women’s, Pediatrics, Trauma/Burn, Neurosciences, and Cancer, and is poised for continued and accelerated growth.

THE LOCALE - MOBILE, ALABAMA:

As Alabama’s third largest city, Mobile is considered one of the Gulf Coast’s biggest cultural and economic centers with a diverse and growing economic base led by healthcare, education, government, shipbuilding, manufacturing, aerospace, and steel.

Mobile is a picturesque city located at the mouth of the Mobile River at Mobile Bay with more than 600,000 residents.  Downtown Mobile is beginning to boom with plans for opening up access to the Mobile River waterfront.  While the city has a growing, vibrant metro area, its cost of living falls well below national averages, with housing being particularly inexpensive.  Residents enjoy a wide array of cultural attractions and outdoor activities.  Beach communities like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are less than a one-hour drive from downtown.
