Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life.

This position is responsible for the immediate supervision of a residential area housing approximately 300 undergraduates. The assistant director (AD) oversees the programmatic and administrative operations of eight residential facilities within their area of responsibility, including traditional residence halls and several special interest communities. Residence life responsibilities include staff recruitment, training, supervision/evaluation, and development; community development through educational and social programs; specialty housing administration; and assisting with behavioral and conduct issues. Housing responsibilities include academic year and summer housing assignments, assisting with residential building maintenance needs, and monitoring and addressing safety and security issues.

The assistant director supervises the Lead Community Assistant and 12 undergraduate CAs in their daily tasks. Additionally, the AD works closely with the Student Affairs, Facilities Management, Campus Security, and Enrollment Management areas of the university. The AD is required to live on campus, as they serve as a campus-wide on-call resource on a rotational basis, and may be called at any time to assist with student emergencies. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Housing and Residence Life.

Successful applicants must have a master’s degree in student personnel administration or a related field. Candidates must have excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, detail, accuracy, organizational, multitasking, decision-making, problem-solving, and report writing skills; and proven abilities to meet deadlines, make sound judgments, manage confidential and sensitive matters, and work effectively with multiple constituencies. Must also have demonstrated success working with diverse populations, Microsoft Office proficiency, ability and willingness to work nights and weekends as scheduled and needed, and ability to work in student residential buildings that are not handicap-accessible. Additionally, applicants must have a valid United States driver’s license with minimal violations and a personal automobile that’s available 24/7. Final candidates will be subject to criminal history and motor vehicle background checks. Preferred applicants will have a minimum of two years of post-graduate professional experience in residence life, particularly with specialty housing community development, and experience with small institutions and women’s education.
