The Modell Lab at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is seeking aResearch Technologistto study CRISPR-Cas9 biology. The Modell lab studies how CRISPR-Cas9 systems function in nature to provide their bacterial hosts with adaptive immunity against phages and plasmids. We ask fundamental biological questions with an array of approaches including genetics, genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and microbiology. Our studies provide insights into (i) bacterial decision-making and stress responses, (ii) the emerging field of phage therapy for antibiotic resistant bacterial infections and (iii) the development of new and improved Cas9 tools.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    Follows established protocols and uses aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and experiments which may include:
      Propagating and manipulating bacterial cell cultures and bacteriophages Cloning and sequencing plasmid constructs Performing molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis and nucleic acids purification Preparation of DNA libraries for deep sequencing Western and Northern blots, and/or human cell culture and Cas9 editing experiments.
    Keeps a detailed electronic laboratory notebook. Participates in journal clubs and develops skills in written and oral communication. Manages and organizes laboratory equipment, protocols, databases and inventory. Prepares specialized buffers and reagents to support all lab members. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Actively seeks to increase skills and expertise. Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

    1 year of laboratory experience. Independent research project not related to normal course requirements preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
