This role serves as a data collection and dissemination point for college guidebooks, rankings surveys, and other research needs of the institution. This includes research related to COVID -19 and benchmarking our plans and actions in comparison to peer institutions around the county. Surveys serve as the primary source for information and data contained in the guidebooks and rankings. At Syracuse University, the responsibility for compiling the survey responses, ensuring their accuracy, and submitting the surveys in a timely manner is the responsibility of the research analyst. The research analyst, who needs to have exceptional interpersonal skills, must coordinate with a wide range of individuals and offices across the University in order to complete the surveys, including the Comptroller in BFAS, the Registrar, Financial Aid and Admissions Directors, the Vice President for Enrollment Management, and others.


Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred in related field. At least three years’ experience with relational databases and data warehousing, and data retrieval and reporting.

Two or more years’ experience with PeopleSoft or similar enterprise administration system within a higher education context preferred.

Familiarity working in a complex data environment is required.

Job Specific Qualifications

Working knowledge of definitions and interpretations of higher education institutional data elements, especially for institutional research purposes, is preferred.

Skill in data analysis and applied research Experience with spreadsheets and word processing applications.

Experience working in large data sets.

Demonstrated analysis, problem solving, and oral and written communication skills.

Organizational skills, with attention to detail.

Ability to manage confidential data discretely and professionally.

Ability to multi-task, organize workflow, work well in a high pressure environment, and meet deadlines.

Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, and to foster the success of others.


Coordinate with various University and OIR clients to gather required data and/or information for all surveys.

Ensure the timely and accurate completion of institutional surveys from external agencies such as USNWR, College Board, and Princeton Review.

Manage the administration of the legacy Guidebook Database and similar services and tools (e.g., Qualtrics) to ensure proper assignment and completion of survey questions.

Review entered questions on an ongoing basis to assure conformity with respective surveys, and add news questions as needed.

Serve as the primary point of contact for the University and OIR personnel to coordinate completion of ad-hoc requests.

Monitor issue ticket (OT) system tasks for possible escalation, on-time completion, and efficiency/organization.

Support the utilization of BI tools to extract data from single and/or controlled data sources to summarize, verify, and communicate information for standard reports.

Support data group in creating standard templates and communication materials (e.g., presentations, report design, web content).

Other duties as assigned. Prioritize and frequently re-prioritize activities to meet new and established deadlines.
