Position Summary:

The Assistant Manager is responsible and accountable for supervising daily retail operations of Towers Marketplace, with an emphasis on staff performance; aiding in the procurement, receipt, and management of unit inventory; food production and financial management; collaborating with external vendors and retail license partners to provide training, equipment maintenance, and operational compliance.

Supervision:

This position reports to the Manager of Towers Marketplace.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct, in-person, working supervision of retail operations while on-call and on-duty.
  2. Work alongside staff members to model safe and efficient operations and performance expectations.
  3. Motivate, encourage, and support staff performance through regular hands-on training.
  4. Perform scheduling, coaching, and supervision of student, professional, and other staff members, in union with the unit manager.
  5. Assist with training and continuing professional development and education for all staff members to promote a safe work environment for employees and compliance with safety and loss prevention programs according to Dining Services standards.
  6. Ensure outstanding guest experience by overseeing and supporting staff in upholding high and safe standards of appearance, maintenance, and cleanliness in all areas of the dining unit.
  7. Arrange daily operations and services to ensure employees have appropriate equipment, inventory, and resources to perform their jobs and meet goals and deadlines.
  8. Supervise and support the organization and operations of service, guaranteeing the proper flow and safety of food including, but not limited to, the procedures and duties for opening and closing the unit and the supply and presentation of all food and beverage items.
  9. Culinary responsibilities include the ability to work any retail station within the retail unit as needed.
  10. Contribute to staffing needs by covering stations or shifts when necessary.
  11. Develop and maintain an in-depth, working knowledge of all dining software solutions.
  12. Assist with inventory and the ordering of all supplies and services, as needed.
  13. Serve as a secondary point of contact for vendor and license partners and assist with ordering, training, equipment maintenance, etc.


Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two to three years professional experience working in retail food service operations in a college/university setting, a restaurant, or other relevant establishment.
  • A working knowledge, preferably experience, in all areas of foodservice operations, culminating in five years of management experience for a college/university dining program, hotel, restaurant, or other relevant establishments.
  • Proven experience in coaching and supervising employees and the ability to adhere to and train staff in the service standards set by Ithaca College Dining Services.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service while working effectively and respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Proficiency in business and financial practices.
  • Financial acuity.
  • Awareness of food safety and application protocols.
  • Knowledge of culinary applications and familiarity with an array of cuisines.
  • Experience in creating, developing, and delivering training materials and presentations.
  • Technological proficiency in food, business, and beverage platforms.
  • Strong management skills including, but not limited to organization, strategic planning, resourcefulness, interpersonal relations, decision-making, and time management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service while working effectively and respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, overtime, and some holidays.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional education and experience.
  • Experience with GrubHub and order ticket systems.
  • ServeSafe Certification.


Work Environment:

The Assistant Manager completes work within an accessible, safe, indoor, and occasional outdoor environment. Long periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying moderately heavy items (up to 50 pounds) may be necessary. Employees will be issued and/or required to wear slip-resistant shoes, cut gloves, and operate kitchen equipment.
