College of Lake County’s James Lumber Center ( JLC ) is seeking a Technical Production Assistant. The Production Assistant is responsible for the preparation and execution (or assisting in the execution) of production needs for events in the James Lumber Center facility, including college, professional touring, and outside rental events, and assisting with other backstage technical duties under the direct supervision of the JLC Technical Coordinator. This position serves as the primary Audio Systems Technician, Front of House, and Monitor Engineer for all College Music Department events, and primary sound designer and editor for all College Dance Department events.

  1. A Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum of 2 years previous live audio work experience OR an Associate’s Degree plus a minimum of 4 years previous live audio work experience, including a strong understanding of and experience in event specific setup and operation of analog and digital sound systems.
  2. Proficiency in programming and operating audio and video playback software (such as Q-Lab).
  3. Ability to learn, implement, and use new and/or upgraded equipment, software, analog/digital sound boards, and operational systems that support live and/or recorded event needs.
  4. Experience in operations and maintenance of AV networks (such as Dante and SACN )
  5. Knowledge of basic electrical safety and repair skills ( such as soldering & terminating Ethernet cable)
  6. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and drawings pertaining to facility and equipment installed and serviced.
  7. Ability to setup and edit recorded audio for events using software based programs.
  8. Strong knowledge of, and experience in operation of stage lighting systems, safe theatrical rigging practices and setup/operation of video projection systems
  9. Ability to follow directions.
Desired Qualifications
  1. Supervisory work experience in the performing arts.
  2. Excellent communication and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to problem solve and troubleshoot concerns.
  3. Experience in mixing a variety of music styles (i.e., contemporary, choral, jazz, blues, classical, spoken word.)
  4. Knowledge of industry best practices
  5. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis, and over 70 lbs. on an occasional basis, with or without reasonable accommodations. Ability to work on lifts or ladders, with or without reasonable accommodations. Frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, and continuous sitting, walking and standing, ability to work in dimly lit and loud environment.
  6. Ability to successfully work on multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  7. Advanced knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office

Job Category: Student & Customer Service (20%)
1) Assesses and implements audio and technical needs for college, professional touring, and rental events presented in the James Lumber Center ( JLC ), under the direct supervision of the JLC Technical Coordinator.

Job Category: People, Project and Process Management (35%)
1) Maintains availability during performances, events, and other activities as scheduled.
2) Programs lights and/or works as technical support staff as needed for events presented in the JLC .
3) Serves as primary Front of House and/or Monitor Engineer for scheduled events
4) Performs scheduling, training and supervision of JLC tech assistants in audio support and other backstage duties, as designated by the JLC Technical Coordinator.
5) Works load-in, set up and load-out of scheduled JLC activities; including (but not limited to) rigging, configuration of orchestra shell, hang and focus of lighting instruments, lighting programming, set up of staging equipment (some heavy lifting may be required), setup and configuration of audio equipment
6) Arranges for audio equipment rentals when needed
7) Create and maintain show related paperwork (ie. Stage plots, input lists, equipment needs)
8) May work over 8 hours a day, plus evenings and weekends, depending on the needs of the college/event schedule.

Job Category: Product Management (35%)
1) Serves as supervisor for specified events as assigned; supervising backstage duties and personnel in the absence of or in coordination with the Technical Coordinator.
2) Researches and recommends audio equipment purchases, techniques, and procedures to enhance and support requirements for JLC audio equipment maintenance repairs and purchases.
3) Provides general maintenance for JLC audio/visual equipment, and assists in the overall inventory/maintenance of all JLC backstage equipment and supplies. "
4) Maintains up to date crew schedule
5) Supervise work calls and rehearsals in the absence of or in coordination with the Technical Coordinator
6) Serve as alternate point of contact for facility service and upgrades (ie. Contractor installation, vendor maintenance.)
