Assistant Cooperative Education Coordinator

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University is a global leader in experiential learning and cooperative education in which students alternate between academic study and work experiences. The College of Engineering is seeking a Co-op Faculty member to work with our departmental engineering co-op students and employers. The Coordinator will work with both graduate and undergraduate students with an initial focus within the Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering majors.

Responsibilities:

Employer Relations/Job Development: The College of Engineering has grown tremendously over the last 3 years and therefore has a large need for development of new employer partnerships. The Co-op Coordinator is expected to increase partnerships with employers by working with engineering managers and human resources contacts; develop new and maintain ongoing co-op positions and make appropriate referrals for students to apply to these positions; maintain a current understanding of the industry/field, employers, and positions. Activities to support this endeavor include outreach to potential new co-op employers via alumni contacts, professional networking, etc. and site visits to new and existing employers.

Preparation of Students: The Co-op Coordinator will prepare students for the co-op search and work experience, both by teaching co-op related courses each semester, and through individual career advising meetings. Preparation includes teaching interviewing skills, resume writing, communication skills, professional behavior, ethics, and other relevant learning objectives. Additionally, the Coordinator will help to prepare the international student population for employment in the United States. The Coordinator will be available to advise students during their co-op assignments, and will provide an opportunity for students to reflect about their co-op experiences.

Service: The Co-op Coordinator will also perform co-op, departmental, college, and university service as agreed upon by the Coordinator and Assistant Dean and Director/Assistant Directors of Departmental co-op for the College of Engineering. Further, the Coordinator will be encouraged to engage in service opportunities outside the university to enhance the reputation of the co-op program and the university.

Integrated Learning:
Cooperative education is an integral part of the academic experience at Northeastern and our philosophy is that learning in the classroom is enriched by practical experience, and practical experience enriches classroom dialogue. The Co-op Coordinator will collaborate with college faculty, administration and other co-op coordinators to help students integrate their co-op and academic experiences. The Coordinator will also share knowledge of industry with academic faculty to integrate work-based learning with curriculum-based learning.

Qualifications:
  • A master's degree or its academic equivalent is required, and a minimum of three years of professional work experience
  • Experience in a related engineering profession or in career development and counseling of engineering students, industry partnerships, human resources, recruiting or other related area.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and proficiency in computer/technology and database maintenance.
  • Although Co-op Faculty are not currently meeting employers in person due to COVID restrictions, personal transportation and a valid driver's license for future local travel to co-op sites is expected.
  • Proven success in collaborating with a team and in working autonomously; self-starter and independently motivated to achieve goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of professional work experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with an international staff/student population.
  • Experience working with a diverse staff/student population and a demonstrated commitment to achieving and maintaining diversity in the workplace.

Salary Grade:
FAC

Additional Information:
Please include a resume and a detailed cover letter describing your interest in this position, how your experience relates to it, and how you could contribute to the further development and growth of cooperative education for undergraduate and graduate engineering students at Northeastern.
